I thought this guy was trolling, acting like an entitled asshole with a project that will clearly never happen because they've got no idea what they're doing, but people still put this much effort into helping! Loud Silence Posted March 14, 2019 I'm purist, but i would not play Doom on Dosbox while i can use faithful ports such as Choco Doom and Eternity Engine. Dosbox can't run Doom as good as port (at least for me). Also i accept Boom format, it's like Vanilla's brother. I don't see anything wrong in DEHACKED either. What i don't accept: ZDoom family, HW accelerated mode even with filters turned off, freelook (vertical), jump, crouch, 3D models, MODs that changes gameplay too much. I don't know about other purists, but i think they are ok to play with faithful source port instead of Dosbox. A few years ago, all the rage for such "pie in the sky" projects were Hi-Res and/or True Color sprite replacements (or models), later followed by Doom remakes in other engines. With the exception of models (where there were a few guys that actually knew their shit, like those behind the Doom Ascension mod), the only common link between them was that all were looking for shortcuts to an (admittedly) gargantuan tasks. It's not really easy to recolor/redraw all of Doom's 2200+ sprites and textures (I think), so many were looking for "automagic solutions". Too much dreaming, not enough elbow grease. All remakes in other engines that I've seen also never quite got beyond maybe a half-working E1M1 or MAP01 conversion and a couple of monsters, since they also implied a total resource remake. If you refuse to be "lazy", then live by your word and don't ask someone to produce code so you can copy-paste it. I appreciate that you are reflecting on what you were about to attempt. Not a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination but it's a lot to take in and not practical for your idea. Tweaking a deh will be a lot more doable for you now. Do you mean replacing one of the things like pillars or hanging corpses into a weapon you can use? @Benjogami has beat me to the punch: you can't do much more than change the existing weapons' behavior with Dehacked. If you want to have more freedom, then Decorate is what you need (which limits you on port choices but they tend to be the popular ones, so at least you won't find yourself without any feedback). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Dark Pulse Posted March 15, 2019 (edited) As others have said, vanilla Doom is highly restrictive in how much you can add or modify. DeHackEd is limited in how it can replace stuff, and adding to the source code constitutes forking the source code and making your own port. It's been said before, but really, if you want to add stuff, you're much better off switching to an engine where adding stuff is relatively painless and easy, like ZDoom. Perhaps you can tell us just why you want to have all this stuff added to vanilla? Is there some specific reason you must stick to the original game's pretty strict constraints?
