So I found this on the Doom Twitter. Is this...a Joy of Mapping reference? It even has the afro! If it is, has someone from Id secretly participated in recent sessions??

Haha! More than likely it's just a reference to Bob Ross and "The Joy of Painting". After all, that is what "The Joy of Mapping" series is a reference to ;) It would be neat if it was related to Jimmy and the Doom community as well though. Who knows?

Yeah because it's not like idSoftware would have artists on hand, being a game development studio and all.

Why not? Plenty of studios do jokes that are actually a pretty good effort.

 

A mobile game I play for example (Granblue Fantasy) has an event that runs only for 24 hours. Exactly 24 hours. Every single April Fools' Day.

Can instantly TPK your entire team at his 60% and 5% triggers if you don't set yourself up defensively for it. Hardest version's difficulty (the one being fought in this video) is charmingly called "Blackhole" and he has 300 Million HP, making him endgame-tier difficulty. (Yes, there are stronger bosses, but he's about halfway up the chain of what's called HL/Impossible content - normally only accessible to Rank 101+ players; in terms of the "normal" tiers he's second-hardest next to a 420 Million HP raid boss.)

 

And your reward for beating that hardest version?

 

A useless item, that literally says, in its description, that it's totally useless.

 

And it's 100% true.

 

Granted, there are other rewards (an exclusive weapon, some exclusive character skins), but those still mandated actual programming, art, and voice actor support to actually get put into the game.

 

Compared to that, having one of your artists draw a one-off gag image is pretty damn cheap. :P

They probably wanted to show you how good their artists are. Once you are a pro, it probably doesn't take too long to make.
