unpopular retro opinions

- I like both E3M7 of Doom and MAP24 of Doom 2.

 

- I like arcade design in classic shooters. This includes platforming, thin walkways, mazes, damaging floors and crushing ceilings.

 

- I find long, dark and obscure levels interesting. For example E2A8: Elevator Trouble from ROTT, MAP25: Baron's Den from TNT and to some extent, E2M7: Bowels of the Earth from Blood (this map had a great atmosphere and memorable landmarks).

 

- There's not a single bad zone in Sonic 1.

 

- I think frustrating parts and sometimes bad design in otherwise good games belongs to the playthrough. It's like a turning point in any work of fiction that makes the gameplay experience more dynamic. A notable example that comes to mind is Earthworm Jim 2 where lots of the game mechanics and design is varied with a tedious minigame placed every third level taking up a 1/4 of the playthrough. Some players may find it a flawed platformer. I look it as a fun comedy game experience where the player must deal with adversity.

Heck, I find it difficult to play the original DOS executables nowadays due to their low-res which looks terrible on big LCDs. At minimum I want MBF with 640x480.

Based off another user on Tumblr: The pursuit of photorealism in not only a lot of mid-retro games, but for also a lot of modern games too was and is a fruitless pursuit that only leads to outdated fads and bloated filesizes.

I say that 640x480 is alright as Doom 95 had that resolution option and it was an official port and people did play Doom with that version (and this was back in '96). Yes i do know it's not exactly the original game but for most people back then it was close enough and a way to play on Windows.

 

If all you are doing is changing the screen res to 640x480 and keeping everything else as vanilla as possible with a source port of some sort then that's fine (if that's how you want to play Doom).

 

I won't talk about hardware rendering and other stuff as i was mainly talking about keeping it as close to original as possible, but maybe with a little extra, like the resolution being upped (aka Crispy Doom style).

the thing is that anything except official id binaries is a mod. D95 was kinda "officially blessed", but still -- you have to play that exact binary, or you're playing a mod. it doesn't matter how close to "vanilla" your mod are, it is still technically a mod. even Chocolate is a mod. so throwing stones to people who prefer a modded game is a... ahem... not the wisest move. ;-)

I actually played Chrono Trigger on the DS, as the SNES version never made it to Europe. I didn't hate it, but by the time I finished it once I was done with it, because by then the battle system was really tedious and lost its lustre for me. And I think the claims it's absolutely super amazing are way off. But you know what, its relatively good and for Square that's hitting well above where they usually hit for me. I enjoyed Secret of Mana as a product a lot more.

Turok 1 sucks, I absolutely hate Turok, it is an exercise in wandering around environments filled with rooms that are literally identical battling never ending straggling bullet sponges with unsatisfying weapons and awful movement that makes me actively salty whenever one of the 4000 boring tedious jumping sections turn up.

 

5 times I clipped through a log to my death in Treetop Village, 5 fucking times I watched the camera go through the log and into the abyss, I hate it.

 

None of the enemies are good enemies, they're either completely useless melee enemies that can be strafed with no difficulty, bullet sponging unthreatening gimps/dinosaurs with guns or some super accurate tank of a man with a barely dodgeable laser gun who can shoot through himself.

 

Then I turn up to last boss after fighting the world's least effective Cyber T-rex to a guy I 3 shot with the final weapon to end the game. Deep regret.

 

Not even Nightdive's fault it's bad, I mean how do you polish shit?

I loved the concept, thought the weapons were cool, but agree with you about the miserable platforming. The third level nearly gave me a heart attack trying to get to the pyramid, and I couldn't finish the seventh level where you have to jump over the lava. The respawning enemies were the final nail in the coffin for me. It's too bad because it is a really awesome setting, and I'm sure the old Dell comics are interesting, but the game has not aged well at all.

I was hoping 2 was better but I got so lost in the first level I couldn't figure out how to progress.

All versions of Chrono Trigger are garbage and were garbage even in 1995 go play literally any decent game instead.

Daikatana would have been better if critics weren't graphics hoarding morons. If Daikatana was finished during the first development phase and released, critics would have called it "outdated."

Yeah, and by the time it did come out in 2000, well, it was dated there too, since id were on id Tech 3 by then (Quake 3) and Unreal Engine 1.5 was out by that time.

 

But I meant more like some of the ideas he had, like the AI companions and whatnot. That shit was hard even in 2000.

 

2005, 2006 though... different place.

 

By then engine tech had mostly settled down; we weren't getting a cool new engine every other year, but every 3-4 instead. Unreal Engine 2 was out around 2002-2003; Unreal Engine 3's debut came in late 2006 with Roboblitz (although it was known to be under development since 2004).

 

And stuff like that was totally doable.

People who make PSX-styled games (especially horror games) need to start learning about Sega Saturn's limitations and making Sega Saturn-styled horror games (the lighting effects and lo-fi voice compression the console has can give a feel of unease, which is perfect for horror games).

Game ROMs shouldn't be sold in any digital stores. If anything, they should be shared for free (in Switch, for example) so people can try out relics of the past.

actually, full and buildable game source code should be included with any bought game. and with the licence that releases that code (and assets) to public domain after, for example, five years. this way we'll never have any "lost games" anymore, people could learn from the working projects, and studios won't be able to ride their old success ad infinitum.

 

yeah, that includes full engine sources, even if that engine was licensed.
