chungy Posted July 3, 2019 Being that the prior upload was 6 years old (thanks fraggle, none the less!), I thought I'd go ahead and upload a complete copy of the idgames ftp archive here: https://archive.org/details/idgames-2019-07-01. It is a very large file (20GiB!), and it is also possible to download individual files from the archive through the interface accessed by clicking "View Contents": https://archive.org/download/idgames-2019-07-01 Hope this is useful to some of you :) 23 Quote Share this post Link to post

Reisal Posted July 5, 2019 How much space would have been saved if you used 7Z instead of ZIP? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Arrowhead Posted July 5, 2019 Greatly appreciate it! I stumbled across the 2013 one a couple months ago, (I think you originally uploaded that one too?) but this is a definite improvement. d'ling and seeding now! :) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Practically none, since most of the archive is already zip files :) Mind, there's two things people usually expect from 7z: lzma compression (available for zip), and "solid compression" (ala tar, and not available in zip). The former doesn't gain anything at all on the idgames archive, the later makes picking out individual members a large pain, since you have to uncompress at least one whole lzma block (which can be hundreds of MB) to get a few kilobytes out, which makes it very slow. Zip is also generally better supported by... everything. Including archive.org's ability to peek into them and allow you downloads of individual archive members. If it was the wad and text files, it would. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

xvertigox Posted July 8, 2019 Thanks for this - I'll be seeding with 500Mb upload for the foreseeable future. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
