You should all know that when you touch it... you become part of it. Doomguy is the only one special enough to be immune. I often do not go around touching orbs that scream at me. Although I suspect the bowling ball method to work.

The blue sphere is an ancient alien spirit similar to the soul cube "use us!" And is actually powered by a form of purified Argent Energy. A resource they once used like humanity before hell broke loose.

 

The consumption is more like a spirit shrouding over the marine and healing him.
