EPISODE 4: Once Were Angels

Today are presented:

E4M1: Ghastly Plight

E4M2: Teleported

E4M9: Maimed (secret level)

At the beginning of the last episode the lack of ammunition will be felt more acutely than ever, so I highly recommend playing sparingly. Another reason to be more careful is the monsters here love to put us in awkward situations and pin us in a ring or in corners very much. However, this applies to the first map to a lesser exten, but it would still be nice to save as many ammo as possible for the future.

I can't help but note that the sky is very beautiful in this episode! Although it looks a bit unusual for pure hell, in my opinion.

This map puts quite a lot of emphasis on simple puzzles and switch-hunting and we will have to do both either running through lava and burning or very skillfully using radiation suits because there are not so many surfaces that are safe for health. However, if you are not a fan of puzzles, then relax - they are only needed to find secrets and access a secret level and therefore are optional to complete. But for the regular exit we also will have to work hard: it is locked with three keys, each of which will be given to us after a rather difficult battle in conditions of lack of ammunition and space for movement.

In general, this map can strain absolutely any player and become a difficult test for you. But as a result, it is from passing such maps that I get more pleasure! By the way, I was once again convinced that "Plurry" is a brilliant soundtrack! Which map was it originally planned for - this one or for E3M2?

There is a lot, a lot remained behind the scenes when we finished the E1M9: Shotgun Shore... And now we are returning to it to face its true identity - the purest infernal slaughter in all its glory!

It is difficult to recommend anything else here except very careful monitoring of the level of health, armor and ammunition. Intensity of fights won't decrease until the very end of the map and it will often be problematic to return to places already passed.

In my case i'm mostly playing with my mod on, and i'm always looking for good Ultimate wads. That one looks like a jewel!
I hope the conversion it's not a blasphemy for you!

Today are presented:

E4M3: Barons Domain

E4M4: Wood and Brimstone

E4M5: Temple of Pain

This short and uncomplicated map will allow us to take a little break from the previous one and make up for the lack of ammunition that has been dragging on from the very beginning of episode. There are few monsters here and even a cyberdemon with the proper level of care will not cause a lot of problems (if you find the secret you can return to the start of the level and kill cyberdemon easier).

Another short and uncomplicated map will allow us to gain strength before the last four maps ;)) There are also few monsters here, the stock of ammo will still be refilled little by little - including with the help of secrets which will also be more on this map.

The combination of a bright blue color of sky with a lot of shades of green (nukage, marble and vines entangling it) and white rocks is very beautiful and pleases my eyes! This is the second and last map in the megawad where you can face all ten kinds of monsters from the original Doom.

Today are presented:

E4M6: Plea
E4M7: Devils Gullet

E4M8: God Machine

Another level with a lot of valuable and well-hidden secrets, some of which have not only material but also strategic importance.

Spoiler

For example, you can kill spiderdemon without firing a single shot by just visiting one of the secrets. And if you manage to find a secret with a megaarmor closer to the beginning of the level then one or two barons of Hell will have a great chance to die under pressure by the time you arrive to them personally.

I have to take back my words that the E4's sky is not suitable for it. I was cruelly mistaken!

Maybe I've come up with a reason why some direct references to certain maps from the original Doom are sometimes found not on usual slots. Perhaps the fact is that we are given the opportunity to explore seemingly familiar spaces with a different soundtrack, which can give us a slightly different gaming experience. And that's exactly how it is: this map is very reminiscent of the ve-e-e-ry familiar Against Thee Wickedly but accompanied by the track "Sinister"!

***

An extremely fierce final battle which we are given the opportunity to skip almost in full! The only thing is that we must to do is expose and kill the spiderdemon and then it's up to our choice. You can just run in circles and wait until all the walls come down, then run to where the barons of Hell begin to come out on the battlefield. BFG9000 with enough ammo to kill a crowd of 24 demons we can find here easily and then there is a direct road to the exit!

However, it's not a big deal to kill everyone. Mass infighting is the key to success...

I will summarize the overall results related to statistics and the best maps a bit later... And here are the ones that relate specifically to the Once Were Angels episode:

1) E4M2: Teleported (good puzzle map!)
2) E4M6: Plea (great secrets and very beautiful landscapes!)
3) E4M8: God Machine (very rare case of semi-optional final battle!)
