depr4vity Posted August 24, 2019 crispy doom or prboom+ for a more old school (but still modern) experience 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
seed Posted August 24, 2019 (edited) There is no such thing as one port being better than another, each one offers something different and satisfies different needs. Besides GZDoom, you could try: Chocolate Doom - A perfectly accurate source port that aims to preserve all bugs and limitations of vanilla Doom and is deliberately minimalist by design. Also supports older versions of the original Doom games if you're interested in that, along with the changes and bugs specific to those versions (from 1.666 up to 1.9). Only has a Software renderer. Ports for the other Doom engine games (Heretic, Hexen, Strife) also exist. Crispy Doom - Same as Choco but offers more features and has all vanilla limitations either raised, or removed altogether. Also runs at a higher resolution. PrBoom+ - Perfectly accurate Limit-Removing and Boom-compatible port. Especially used by speedrunners and demo recorders. Has many compatibility options to emulate different behaviors and versions. Also supports high resolutions and has a very fast but simplistic OpenGL renderer. Supports older versions of the classic Doom games as well (1.666 and 1.2). A fork with support for UMAPINFO also exists. Eternity - High accuracy advanced, limit-removing and Boom-compatible port. Similar to PrBoom+ but has unique features specific to it, particularly portals. Does not currently have an OpenGL render, only Software. Game support for Hexen and Heretic as well as features such as complevels a la PrBoom+ are WIP. Doom Retro - Similar to Crispy but also Boom-compatible and has more features. Less accurate and has most, if not all vanilla bugs fixed. k8Vavoom - Fork of Vavoom, which originally ceased development back in 2011. More modern and has more features than Vavoom. I am not very familiar with their set of features though. Zandronum - Multiplayer focused ZDoom derivative and the continuation of Skulltag, which ceased development long ago. Less advanced than GZDoom. Also supports single play as well as Heretic, Hexen, and Strife. Doomsday - Similar to GZDoom, more-or-less. I'm not familiar with most of its features however. Has support for Heretic and Hexen as well. Hardware demanding. For more info: https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Comparison_of_source_ports Also, stop spamming with random images. Nekr0s1s Posted August 24, 2019 What about Risen3D? it's similar to Doomsday, but it supports Boom-compatible wads. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Bauul Posted August 24, 2019 Risen3D is a pretty powerful port to play with, but a super idiosyncratic port to map for, so there's very very little dedicated stuff out there. I'm only aware of Dragon Sector. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

DuckReconMajor Posted August 24, 2019 Doomsday is super-glossy Doom and was my first sourceport, it's definitely worth a try. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Dark Pulse Posted August 24, 2019 (edited) Bacon. Anyone who disagrees needs their head examined. In all seriousness, you could try Playstation Doom or Doom 64, which both tinker with how the game "feels." There's some source ports that bring those both back to PC. Spectre01 Posted August 25, 2019 Unless you're looking for a more retro experience, I feel as though GZDoom and PRBoom+ have all the bases covered. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
BigBoy91 Posted August 25, 2019 I'm sorry, but I burst out laughing at that picture. It just completely took me by surprise. I was gonna give you a breakdown of several source ports, but it looks like Seed beat me to it. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Grazza Posted August 25, 2019 Well I now have the results here of the interviews and the aptitude tests that you took last week, and from them we've built up a pretty clear picture of the sort of person that you are. And I think I can say, without fear of contradiction, that the ideal port for you is GZDoom. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
