Big update time! I added number of maps to the tally so megawads can be distinguished from smaller works. It doesn't represent the size of a WAD accurately because certain single maps have bigger area than some megawads, but it's good enough. As always, if you spot any mistakes, please let me know!

I have an idea how to stir up something interesting here. The recent years saw an increase in creativity by talented mappers which is not reflected in the list. The thread was published in 2019. The idea presented below would quickly populate the list with fresh masterpieces such as Fractured Worlds and Judgment which unbelievably received only a single vote.

 

Proposition:

 

Doomworld Community Top WADs of All Time (Phase 2)

 

- Everyone who has or hasn't already voted gets an opportunity to allocate another 55 points to (Phase 2) vote.

- The batch of points for (Phase 2) must be allocated to wads that are not older than 2019

- Voters are only allowed to edit the vote once a year with the vote in question attached in the post as a quote

 

- Remove the possibility to edit (Phase 1) votes for some time to avoid overload but new voters for are still able to allocate 2 batches of 55 points.

 

or:

 

- Voters are not allowed to edit in (2019+) wads to their (Phase 1) votes

- Voters are not allowed to transfer (2019+) wads from their (Phase 1) votes to the (Phase 2) votes 

 

The second option seems like too much hassle actually, many would overlook such rule.

It could be beneficial for the sake of clarity to close this thread and set a new one for Phase 2 where the voting takes place and the second batches of points are added to the existing tally if you go for such thing.

game, I'm afraid that segmenting the votes will defeat the purpose of "Top WADs of All Time". We already have "favorite 1990 WADs"/"best GZDoom maps"/"top WADs of the past 4 years"/etc which specialize in their own category. Adding another specialized thread will dilute the big picture, in my opinion. I see the solution to recent WADs being underrepresented here as more people, especially newcomers, voting and updating their votes. Mappers, don't be shy about asking fans of your maps to vote here! The rules are made so they have to vote for something else also, so it's good for everyone.

 

Personally, I too would love to see the more recent WADs getting more activity here. The static top is boring, and I don't believe that the skill of the community doesn't grow. Before I made the graph in the OP, I expected it to be more or less an upward staircase. I made years 2020 and later bold in the tally so they stand out at least a little bit.

 

The banner looks fantastic. If you happen to make one for this thread, I'll put it in the OP without any hesitation.

Mapping has gotten substantially better. But I think the main obstacle to new wads making it to the top is diffusion. Prior to around 2018, that wasn't a big factor; even as recently as 2016, there were few enough wads that everyone could play and agree on a limited number that stood above the rest. 

 

But take 2021, which everyone agreed was an amazing year as a whole. Since the upper echelon of content is 15-20 wads instead of a handful, people's playing will be a lot more scattered, and even when this thread's voting catches up to properly account for 2021 wads, it's unlikely any given wad will have been played widely enough to crack the list's top-20 or even top-30. That is relevant because those upper portions of the list are dominated by wads that have been played extremely often. Being a very good wad isn't enough to get there; you need cultural ubiquity.

An author is also a player, and they can enjoy their own creation as much as they enjoy the others'.
