What's the best gun in Doom II?

Recommended Posts

The most well-rounded weapon is probably the Plasma Rifle but it's rarely the *best* weapon for every given scenario, unless that scenario is stun-locking an enemy.

The SSG is fairly overpowered, and by far the best weapon in single player IMO. Always available to use due to the high quantity of shells, deals ~2.5x the regular shotgun damage equating to a rocket launcher that can't self-damage, most mid-tier enemies die to it in just 2/3 shots and the longer reload time rarely negatively affects you due to how easy it is to avoid projectiles or demon bites by constantly moving. Of course there are situations where other weapons would be better like Plutonia's distant Chaingunners or swarms of mid-tiers or boss monsters, and the Rocket Launcher has the bonus of being able to damage enemies without engaging with them (like around a corner or from afar), but in almost every situation the SSG is an option if not the best choice for the job.

Even in multiplayer its one-shot kill potential means it's dominant in PvP modes unless you're in a map filled with tight corridors where the Rocket Launcher excels instead.

Oh, and of course it can't hurt the Icon of Sin :]

I always though it would be cool if the Icon Of Sin, and any of the fleshwall textures, would produce squirts of blood when you shot at them (instead of a bullet puff).  Would've really driven home the implication that you're in some sort of organic structure

Most people will say SSG so of course that would be my obvious answer but since i wanna bring an alternative it would be the Plasma Rifle/Plasma Gun

I'm definitely going with the SSG for sure. Can be used in just about any situation... But if i'm going to say something different, I'm gonna go with the Plasma Rifle.

Hmm, in most PWADs I've played, the Plasma Rifle is always redundant when I've already obtained the BFG.

By the way, I'll say the Rocket Launcher, since it's basically a long range SSG. Its biggest weakness is the lack of ammunition + the splash damage (+the shit auto horizontal aim that may damage you if you are standing on a ledge sniping enemies in a lower platform)

I use every weapon except maybe the fist and the pistol

When the going gets rough, I switch to the Plasma usually. Incredible DPS and the pain-locking potential is insane. The only drawback of the weapon is the projectile width, meaning it it is bad for shooting around corners. You have to expose yourself to fully make use of it. So not recommended against hitscanners :P

If Doom II gets it's Sigil I hope there'll be a KFC9000 in honor of Buckethead

It would be cool if subsequent classic doom projects from Romero had some new monsters and/or weapons added to them.

Plasma gun? You must be joking! BFG is way more ammo-efficient, can two-shot boss enemies and one-shot pairs of archies and/or barons or melt roomfuls of hitscanners.

They are situational. Originally I threw away my Plasma Rifle when I got the BFG, and later I realized there are still places you want to use Plasma Rifle instead of BFG.

In my experience, when you have both and one of them is a better choice than any other weapon, it's gonna be BFG 95% of the time. Plasma Gun is only better in some very niche situations, apart from not having the BFG of course :P

The Plasma Rifle can still be the #1 choice when you have enemies trickling in while in tight quarters. That is assuming they are of relatively low HP and you cannot afford to have them build up for a BFG shot. Here's an example in SF2012 where the Plasma Rifle is used over the BFG (2:55):

The best weapon is the non-berserked fist, of course.

It would be nice if you could get a pet Cyberdemon like you can get a pet Maulotaur in Hexen.
