What Exactly Is Markiplier's Connection To Doom?

DSC

Recommended Posts

Most of you probably know him... He is quite the powerhouse on YT. And you see, I have this feeling that he actually is a big fan of Doom, even if Mark is not exactly the kind of guy that I imagine the Doom community would watch... Although I haven´t seen the videos I'm about to mention, I do know that he made one about BD, an entire series on D2016, and even appeared on DYKG's video about... Yes, you guessed the million dollar question... Doom. He obviously likes the games, but does anyone who watched the videos or his a fan of him know more precisely to what extent? I had knowledge of the videos for quite some time, but only now I remembered then, and I'm just curious...

To be honest, I can't think of any famous Youtubers who like Doom to the extent of regular Doom enthusiasts (modders, speedrunners, etc.) or regular players.

Spoiler

Icaruslives and Gggmanlives are probably the exceptions, but still. They don't

really like Doom to the extent of regular Doom enthusiasts (modders, speedrunners, etc.) or regular players AFAIK.

famous is a subjective and relative term, but a decent marker is if the individual achieves enough notoriety for mainstream media to mention them in an article or whatever. This can be for good reasons i.e they are popular, or it could be negative reasons due to controversy. You hear about "cult" status when someone or something is not mentioned by critics or panned outright, but still has a loyal following. "Internet famous" is also a meme for a reason, one probably has to achieve pewdiepie level or similar to be considered actually famous or "a household name" as it were.

Icarus is primarily a Doom channel, so I wouldnt count him as a general gaming channel for the sake of this discussion. gggmanlives would count though, although I do question how much he actually plays certain old-school shooters (particularly Blood).

The example I can think of (although he is probably "almost-famous") is Civvie11. Watch enough of his videos, and it is very clear that he plays a lot of Doom, but his channel is mostly retro-ish gaming. So he is a non-doom dedicated channel that very likely is a regular doom player.

For the original question, Doom is one of the most important and influential ever made, is it really a surprise that it has a lot of fans? Doom was a defining game for MANY people, casual and hardcore players alike, so it shouldnt be a surprise that many people like it. If this were a much more obscure game he mentioned, then maybe, but Doom is hardly obscure...

The thing is, Doom is not obscure, but it certainly is niche. I would not be surprised if he just knew the games, but he has got knowledge and dedication that, while not in the same league as modders and speedrunners, obviously, is still noticeably bigger than the average gamer.

By, the way, this whole thread got me curious about one thing: does anyone here enjoy Mark unironically? I personally still watch him from time to time, and I'm a bit ashamed of that... Yes, I know people should not have guilty pleasures, anyone likes what they like, and I watch him just because of the huge variety of games he plays were all sorts of crazy stuff happens, and I guess that is a perfectly normal reason... But that "12 year old humor" is something that I feel a lot of shame for hearing...

And many times even enjoying...

I think he and Doom go back. He was the guest narrator on Did You Know Gaming's Doom episode and during his Doom 2016 playthrough he often reminisces about the originals. Same deal in his Brutal Doom playthrough.

You could also argue the same for Angry Joe , he loves him some DOOM.

I don't really subscribe to bigger channels, most of whom I watch have up to around 3000 subs max, one of them used to have 15k before changing channels after some incident with work, now he only has like over 1500 on a new channel.

Yeah Civvie is the guy who I have no trouble believing that he eats, sleeps and breathes the stuff that he does for his channel and thats a big part of why he's my main go to channel these days, although what actually led me to him were his Blood videos.

I actually have no idea who markiplier even is, because I do pretty well living under a rock when I want to, which is most of the time these days.

I enjoy watching Mark unironically. I think most people who watch his stuff watch it unironically (Though the fact that I have trouble grasping what it means to watch something "Ironically" might have something to do with that). I'm not exactly a fan of his stuff but I do like going to his channel and watching some select videos, especially horror games. Also, I think it's perfectly fine for someone to have guilty pleasures (Though I get the feeling that you and I have different definitions on what is a guilty pleasure). Why would you be ashamed of watching something like Markiplier? It's not like you're enjoying something depraved like animal abuse videos or something. What's there to be ashamed of and what's wrong with "12 year old humor?" (Whatever that means). What's funny is funny and everyone finds different things funny.

Markiplier likes "Classic" Doom? Wow, that's news to me.

Seriously. I wouldn't know if this topic didn't exist.

I even watched some of his videos not that long ago, but I never came across any where he played or even mentioned classic Doom. Ever. And I don't remember hearing this voice in any of the Doom related Did You Know Gaming videos... Weird...

Well he did posted a Brutal Doom gameplay clip video (on E4M1) so that counts as classic Doom to me.

Also he is featured in the DYKG' Doom video and I'm kind of surprised (it is right in the title of that vid)

Now that depends on why you are watching something ironically, if you watch it to mock it with others (by parody or roasting, be it by videos made yourself or a group viewing where you all talk shit) then I see that as legitimate, that's just having a laugh at shit (see DSP).

Watching it because the idea of irony is inherently funny? That sounds like a cover up for someone unironically invested in something but is too embarrassed.

In context of this thread, I don't watch Markiplier, it isn't something I can find enjoyment in through mockery or genuine interest. In context of something like DSP I would indeed derive satisfaction from watching it out of the mockery I can give to it.

This... sounds like you described a guilty pleasure. Though just talking shit about a bad film with a group of friends seems to be closer to watching something, "Ironically"? I mean I watched The Room and I enjoyed it because of how bad it is. But I don't think I can call it "Ironic" watching. I thing it would more be my guilty pleasure movie since I know how bad it is but I still enjoy it.

This is an example of people being subscribed to channels and forgetting about it. Seriously, YouTube has a very crappy subscription concept which needs an upgrade.

When his dad introduced him to pc gaming doom was one of the first games he played on it. Classic doom actually means alot to him

Probably for the same reason LGR is used for Duke Nukem content on that DYKG channel.

He’s a fan of the game they wanted to cover, and a popular YouTuber. While LGR has definitely done some Duke Nukem videos, has his own impersonation of the voice he uses from time to time, he isn’t really known for Duke stuff as much as he is for retro computer stuff.

Edit: wow, didn’t realize this was from 2019 and someone randomly bumped this 9 hours ago.. wtf why?
