What's something about Doom that you absolutely hate?

Recommended Posts

I really hate berserk. I don't like that it colors the screen red and was surprised that there is no option is gzdoom to remove that (some ports do have that option). I also don't seek berserk as a viable powerup. It's a shooting game and approaching monsters typically gets you hurt quite badly. And I'm just not enjoying approaching enemies that throw stuff at you.

This is why I also don't like the chainsaw. You can mow down some demons with it in narrow corridors, but otherwise it's absolutely useless to me.

And yeah, I can imagine you could learn to be good with it. But I'm just not interested in this kind of gameplay.

Only thing I really hate in the perfect game that is Doom is Sandy's city levels

Counterpoint: without Sandy's city levels, we would never have had the best song in the Doom II soundtrack, "Into Sandy's City".

Things I hate about Doom

-People ripping on Sandy's work 0_o

I defy anyone to make the number of maps he made, in the time he made them, using the tools and computers he made them on. And every level is interesting and has unique gimmicks and ideas. Yeah sure some of them don't look as aesthetically pleasing as Doom's E1, or indeed a lot of other Doom levels. But really. Astonishing creativity.

Also:

-People ripping on Evilution, for similar reasons.

@Doomkid no ban plz. Sandy and Team TNT made me say this.

Creating maps with her, you'll kill two birds with one stone

RNG.

When HellKnight gives me 64 damage two times in a row - this is absolutely terrible.

And... Leakage of anti-radiation suit. Two times within 10 seconds...

Why I don't have that "luck" in the "Genshin Impact" and its casino, damn it!?

Or possibly kill two loves with one stone.

[edit] hopefully not I wish @TheMightyWhoosh every success in that relationship. :)

I agree.  I only pick up the berserk if I need to fully replenish my health.  I don't care about punching pink demons down when I could be using the super shotgun.

TBH, the way history has played out such that there are so many different complevels to worry about. They couldn't have done some final bugfixing before moving on?

You know, i actually prefer it this way. I'm not a huge fan of 100% symmetrical scenes, even if they take part into symmetrical environments. Feels a bit more natural and less staged. Maybe Mr Petersen thought the same way?

Please, don't cast me into the fire.

  1. Weapons not being centered, thank goodness for the sprite fixing projects.
  2. Chaingunners, fuck them
  3. Archviles, *fuck them*
  4. Revenants
  5. Basically the whole Plutonia megawad (with very, very few map exceptions)
  6. Infinite-height (But rarely, I'm willing to ignore it)
  7. Intercepts Overflow, better known as all ghosts effect, as well as the blockmap bug
  8. Shorttics
  9. Random Crashes
  10. E4M1
  11. E4M6
  12. Plutonia, again
  13. Habitat
  14. Baron's den
  15. Gigantic levels (With a few exceptions)
  16. Plutonia
  17. Wads that advertise themselves as "boom" or "mbf" compatible that actually aren't, Gibbon said it once and I completely agree with him, if they don't run in Dos Boom or Dos MBF, they aren't actually compatible, period.

The glaring lack of just one more additional true boss to give us a real challenge beyond the Cyberdemon, Spider Mastermind, and even the Icon of Sin.

If the original Doom/Doom II had its own version of the D64's Mother Demon, everything would be perfect and complete.

So, how do you call those wads that have Boom and MBF features but doesn't run on Dos Boom or Dos MBF? I guess they are called as "compatible" just to make easy to the players to know what set of features they can expect from that wad/map.

Ideally, PrBoom / DSDA compatible and WinMBF / Woof! compatible. I also agree with Gibbon, just because I don't want to throw the DOSBox junkies for a loop. Not saying ever mapper has to test in DOS, I don't always. But it's worth mentioning, I think.

Yeah, makes sense. I just use the term because seems to be the term adopted by a lot of people here. But I prefer to use "complevel x" to refer to any specific wad.

Couldn't agree more. The "auto-miss" feature!

A similar issue is frustratingly common with ""LIMIT REMOVING"" wads as well. Even if the maps are all in Doom format, if you include a bunch of wacky effects via a .BEX lump that only runs in Boom-and-up ports, and a MAPINFO with some insane non-vanilla features being employed, your goddamn wad is Boom compatible or (in some cases) MBF-and-up.

I swear to fuck the amount of wads called "limit removing" that are actually Boom due to a litany of non-mapping-related features is stunningly high.

Hello. I don't hate. But the dislike of how ugly any map looks with the Light Amplification Visor power-up has made me avoid using it ever in any of my maps.

the ENTIRE screen going red when you take a lot of damage. just gets you killed 9 times out of 10.

trying to shoot enemies that are above your view height is one of the most oddly degrading experiences you can have.

As Dusty said, PRBoom+ compatible, while pointing out the complevel to use so the map does not break
