Classic Doom addiction

Does anybody else have an uncontrollable urge to make and play Doom maps and mods?

Recently I have become obcessed with cramming as many 3D mods in to my Doom game folders as possible as well as (oldschool) map making (I do not yet know any of the fancy stuff in Doombuilder, however I think a map can still be beautifull and fun using just classic mapping methods)

I don't think i've taken a break longer than a week or two in the 2 years i've been playing doom. When i'm tired of vanilla play, i go binge play mods, and when i'm tired of mods i go play vanilla. It just doesn't get old.

some people out there are still improving the source code for the game. it seems that Doom is a heavy drug -- once you tried it, and then you cannot stop...

I think they put crack in this fucking game. I cannot explain it. Since I began mapping in 2001 I've created around 250 maps and I have two more wads in the oven as we speak.. It's been so many years and, speaking frankly, I've actually tried and failed to kick the habit over the years.. thankfully I've moved past the point where it was consuming too much of my life!

There's a reason so many 90's wads say "thanks to my wife for putting up with my addiction" or some sort of variant in the text file, lol. I'm glad I'm by no means alone in my addiction.

There also a reason that in the 90's doom was banned from company computers for clogging the servers. It was just as addictive back then if not more. And now with the technology of the current times and knowledge of the source code, it's getting to be insane and I LOVE it!

Yep, i'm addicted. Always playing in vanilla way (no mods) with amazing Eternity Engine. How Doom could ever die with such perfect gameplay and endless amount of community-made WADs??? Writing of this made me itchy to play it again... See ya!

I always loved the old DOOM episodes, even Master Levels/TNT/PT. I grew up with them and I'll die with them. I don't know what it is, it had some magical effect on me when I played Ultimate Doom and Final Doom on the very first PSX. I probably played hundred FPS games in the last 25 years but most of them had sadly no replay value. For instance, Bulletstorm,- was fun to play and unlock stuff but never touched it again since. Won't happen with Doom!!!

Doom 3 : Played the Original + ROE addon only twice within 15 years,- doesn't look good either although it's Doom. I'd rather run through Perfect Hatred for the thousandst time :-)))

I overcame MOBAs.

I overcame Counter Strike.

Hell, I even overcame World of Warcraft during it's peak.

But Doom is the only game that I can't get over. Sure I took a year or two break from it, but it keeps dragging me back to hell for more.

It's my gaming baseline, I'll play other games as they release or catch my fancy but I always go back to Doom as my daily driver.

The intense familiarity mixed with the sheer breadth of content is a godly combo.

I have about 600 retro cartridges, and have pretty much abandoned console gaming altogether to grind through Doom almost every night.

This right here. I'll often play Doom between other games, or when I can't figure out what to play. I usually then end up blasting through a megaWAD instead of doing whatever I originally intended to do.

Doom just feels RIGHT to me. It scratches an itch other games can't, despite me knowing the damn games like the back of my hand - I have never once been bored of the games themselves.

Honestly, I think Doom is a game which allows nearly infinite creative potential, and I believe people will continue making maps for many many many years... and I'll still be addicted then. ;)

I mean sometimes. I will go into spree's of these old fps games. So like, one week I'm playing Quake or Half Life day in and day out. Then the next week I'm playing Blood or Duke 3D. Then before you know it I'm back to Doom.

It's a game I use to try to quit whenever anything shiny and new came along (Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, etc....) finally after a few years of that I just stopped trying to find something to replace it.  I might get distracted for awhile, but I end up playing Doom at least a couple of times every year; and nothing beats the satisfaction I feel when working on a Doom map of my own creation.

I've just realized I'm a Doom addict. I don't play anything except Doom, I've read every doomwiki article (not counting pages about PWADs and maps) and almost everyday check news and community activity on doomworld and zdoom forum. Feel myself a bit nerdy.

+ also hunting mods on almost a daily basis.

This game never gets old. I like it :) .

I can't relate, although I'd like to.
I barely play this game since I burned out many years ago. And if I do it's just for personal projects. I haven't been keeping up with anything in the community so I'm pretty lost.

okay, well I will admit it is a huge step forward compared to 90s tools.. but gzdoom builder seems to take it a step further

I still use doombuilder 1 hotkeys. I couldn't get used to gzdoom builder changing forcibly changing some of them.

I wouldn't say I'm obsessed, but I have decided Doom is basically the best FPS ever made and aside from some other venerable classics and the efforts of certain companies to revive the genre, there is genuinely no reason to play newer FPS games because they're all rubbish and even Doom 2016, which isn't rubbish but it is kind of one and done, the arcade mode helps a bit buts it not that replayable. And what else is there? Rage 2? Borderlands 3? Destiny?. Nah I'll stick with Doom.

I haven't really seriously got into mapping yet but I definitely want to, however it shouldn't really take priority over writing stories which is what I've really wanted to do since I was a teen.
