Tammuz Posted December 27, 2019 What does it really mean for the player when his health is at 30% and the HUD shows Doomguy with blood-shot eyes, hunched over, blood pouring out his nostrils? What kind of injuries do you imagine for the percentages? How do you contextualize it with the facial ''features'' of the HUD? 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
seed Posted December 27, 2019 I think the faces themselves are self-explanatory. Below 30% Doomguy is more or less a dead man walking with heavy injuries sustained all over his body. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Yet we can still run at 60 mph while carrying a chainsaw, two shotguns with 100 shells, a chaingun with 400 bullets, a rocket launcher with 100 rockets and both the plasma rifle and BFG with 600 cells. Not to mention being unable to break his legs from falling from high places. He truly is something else... 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
The_MártonJános Posted December 27, 2019 @DSC I theoretize it's only his head/face that receives damage despite his helmet. Therefore, Doomguy might "only be his head" while the rest of his body runs on a different battery or the sort, and only stops functioning once his head shuts down, due to a linked lifeline. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

Ashley_Pomeroy Posted December 27, 2019 (edited) Realistically, almost all of the injuries our hero sustains are lacerations. He's immune to falling damage so he never fractures his legs or hips, and he can run straight into the wall at high speed without incident, so obviously in the future world of Doom they've given the soldiers adamantium skeletons. The healthpacks are full of hydrating skin lotion. The Doomguy rubs the lotion on his skin, then it puts the lotion in the basket. However most of the monster attacks are bites and scratches, so he really needs tougher skin. Bites, scratches, and burns from the fireballs and plasma shots. I don't know if the cacodemon spit is supposed to be acid or not. And of course bullet impacts. He can survive a tonne of bullet impacts for a man who doesn't obviously have body armour, but then again they are pistol bullets, so perhaps he just flexes his abs. For all we know the world of Doom has gone back to .32acp, who knows. The irony is that in the real world it's relatively easy to protect a soldier against lacerations, harder but not impossible to protect against burns, but there's no way to protect against violently abrupt changes in momentum - bulletproof vests stop the bullet but don't evaporate the kinetic energy, stab-proof vests aren't any use if you fall a hundred feet onto the ground etc. Edited December 27, 2019 by Ashley_Pomeroy 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Doomkid Posted December 29, 2019 (edited) I never thought of the specific injuries that would result in his face looking so dead, it would be pretty gruesome though based on how bloody he is. At his bloodiest, it almost looks like he’s missing teeth when he grins or grits them in anger. This is a side note but I always loved how expressive the status bar face is. He looks so unsure when he’s under 80, lacking the confidence of a full-health marine. When he’s under 60, he’s flat out angry, looking very determined. Under 40 and he just looks like he’s damn near giving up, a hopelessness in his eye, head drooping where he can barely keep going. Under 20 is total desperation, begging for a medikit, knowing death could come at any moment. I love how they managed to convey the appropriate level of desperation for your situation so well with that face. I wish expressive HUD faces lasted beyond just Wolf3D and Doom, they were great. Maximum Matt Posted December 29, 2019 Hey man Quakeguy had a Quakeface, too 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Solmyr Posted December 29, 2019 Below 80%; minor bruises and scratches, doomguy got his nose slightly busted up. Below 60%; a couple of broken ribs, several bite marks, scratches and some minor burns, his bowels are bruised, his face and other parts of his body are swelling due to infected wounds and edema. Below 40%; doomguy's pain makes standing up straight impossible, minor contusion, blood begins to pour out from every cavity, more broken ribs. Below 20%; most of doomguy's body is covered in scratches, bite marks, some non lethal bullet wounds, some second degree burns, his scalp has a deep cut, minor internal bleeding, minor brain swelling and damage, blood reflux due to severe gut bruises and his abdomen has a deep cut wich almost reaches the peritoneal bag. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

I like how his beef is that Doomguy can do all that while he's injured. Edit: okay, poster said he was joking. But there's still others out there that would make this quibble with a straight face.
