Can you judge a map based on its automap?

There is a map in Unwelcome that the automap layout looks vaguely like an inverted phallus and I kinda liked the map a bit more after seeing it.

 

 

But no, only on a superficial level the automap could be artistically a mandala while the map itself doesn't have to be impressive as well, or viceversa.

lol no. Just because you're already lost it. Since it's possible to make a map which cannot be read from automap (in this Universe) - the answer will be "no". Because +- gives -. Or "Yes versus No" gives "No"

If that 'whether' read 'if', I'd agree that extreme automap tidying -- beyond the basics like, say, hiding sky borders -- is anticorrelated with the bottom rungs of laziness. But I think the opposite case doesn't reflect anything, because that sort of automap cleanup is far from the norm. Most recent prestige projects and good maps still don't do it.

 

As a side note, I think it should remain 'a thing some projects/mappers do and some do not', rather than shifting into an encouraged step of finalization for all. Many people prefer the look, and the navigational cues, of the unaltered map. I'll take a thorny thicket of lines over a full-on Brazilian.
