Is there a minimal resolution requirement for sprites?

So I'm creating this explosion that makes debris, and it works beatifully - except for the smallest sprites. I have chunks like 8x14 and they are displayed, but then I tried doing 3x3 pixels or 1x1 and they just don't show. I'm not sure what's the problem here, sprite resolution?
