Combinebobnt Posted January 11, 2020 The BFG with zdoom random can theoretically do alot of damage so we wanted to figure out the chance of oneshotting a cyberdemon with it (impossible in vanilla I think). We ran a script calculating the damage for 100+ million runs but never got a 4000, so it needed some math estimation to get an answer... https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lV_WRaxK_QMippBn_fhzQ21oZzRVwJrs1X9KMplTIhs Got 0.00000000000000000323 % chance as an answer. Hope the math is correct! I didn't find anything about this on the googleinterwebs so the people must know. 14 Quote Share this post Link to post
Phobus Posted January 12, 2020 I can't check the maths for you, but I can report I've had exactly one one-shot kill with a standard BFG9000 on an undamaged Cyberdemon playing ZDoom in my entire playing career. I was pretty lucky even by that standard, too, as I was point-blank in a corridor and didn't know he'd be there and almost definitely would've died if he didn't. It was one of the Zort WADs by Cyb and it was probably 14-15 years ago, on either ZDoom 1.22 or 2.0.63a. So yeah, it is possible, but it is terribly unlikely. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Job Posted January 12, 2020 A two shot for any boss monster is a dream for me. I can hardly get the BFG to do the job in the appropriate number of shots. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted January 12, 2020 I swear I just pick up shitty BFGs that somehow managed to pass QC testing. It feels like it takes 10 fucking BFG balls before the bastards go down sometimes, even when they’re in the cone. I think they might be Chinese knockoff models and mappers just place them around to save a few bucks, cut corners, thinking I won’t notice.. I’m onto you cheapskates!! 8 Quote Share this post Link to post

I've read a countless deep dive articles on the BFG's programming, and I still can't get it to work that effectively. Shoot ball, turn in whatever direction target enemy is in, situate within cone of destruction, get disappointed. I mean, I can hardly wipe out a medium mob of imps and a revenant. I've tried moderating angle, speed, approach, not much of a change. Typically I put those 40 cells to better use with the plasma rifle. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I understood BFG's use from this video. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Job Posted January 12, 2020 It's a good video, but I already saw it. :I Maybe I'm just not effectively implementing the tactics. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Andromeda Posted January 13, 2020 I'm surprised it's even possible! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
idbeholdME Posted January 13, 2020 1) "Looks inside the document." 2) "Runs away in panic." Yeah, I'll just assume you are correct. The sad part is that if this had already happened to somebody, they probably don't realize that they are the luckiest human on Earth. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Gez Posted January 13, 2020 Pro-est of pro BFG strats: there's a rather long delay between the moment you pull the trigger, and the moment the ball is launched. Monsters do not hear the ball being launched, they hear you pulling the trigger. So use the delay to cheese the monsters! Get in front of a door, shoot, then open the door. The door finishes opening, and a BFG ball flies in the room. Monsters get blasted to bits and they don't even notice. Likewise for teleporters: pull the trigger, step on the teleporter, you move to some other place, the ball is shot then and monsters explode. On some levels with large enough areas, you can even do crazy stuff like shoot a bunch of BFG balls in the void, then run to a building, open a door, and let the tracers mow through a massive crowd of monsters repeatedly, it's pretty fun. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
