Does Sonic Mania differ from romhacks? Yes it does and so would this new retro styled Doom game be able to differ from pwads.

The difference is romhacks for Sonic have a larger barrier to entry than pwads for Doom. The Doom community is a lot larger and, I assume, produces a lot more content than the Sonic romhack community.

Why rely on idtech1 when they could design a completely new retro engine for modern hardware in mind? This could also mean having many advanced modding features being part of that new engine's default "vanilla" features. Something easy to mod, easy to create map for and something easy to maybe even make open source someday.

So, GZDoom? Or Quake? I really don't see the point of putting resources into this when those resources could be put into Doom Eternal.

GZDoom can't change too many things being still based on idtech1 and being expected to work with older stuff. New engine would be something that wouldn't need to emulate idtech1 engine features at all. Just rebuilt the basic Doom gameplay experience in it's classic form with a new engine. Quake engine has the problem that it isn't sprite based like idtech1 is so it isn't as easy to mod. I guess the closest thing we will have is the new Doom 64 port.

Nice im learning Trechbroom to play with Dusk SDK, for me, i hope it's get some kind on trackin on Mods to show that wat potential can have 3D Engines.

But it's will not be more easy or accessible as Doom mods

On that note, when we finally figure out how to connect our brains directly to VR headsets the first game i'd like to see an adaptation for is doom 2016/eternal, so you can do the glory kills yourself

There is a VR version of Doom 4 already; called "Doom VFR". Dunno whether it lets you carry out glory kills with motion controls. Probably best that it doesn't unless you play in a padded room.

That'd be pretty awesome. One caveat: if it's going to be a new engine divorced from Id Tech 1, then it's also divorced from doom.wad as the foundation on which mods are built. Except perhaps with a compatibility layer that translates Id Tech 1 stuff (Doom, Heretic, etc) into the new engine's format?

There's also UDMF which is kinda that already, but for a map format. Still needs an IWAD base though. Closest we have to an IWAD of our own is FreeDoom.

If it was "just" that easy we probably would already have ports trying that. What you forget here is that many of the things that are the essence of Doom's gameplay are precisely the things you'd lose in a more modern engine and which make certain things hard to implement in Doom ports, if not impossible.

I want something that isn just a copy paste of Ultimate Doom with HD graphics...

Games like Amid Evil and Ion Fury are made for the 90s nostalgia

Doom 2016 and Eternal are made to be somewhat, new experiences.

I appreciate that we have classic Doom (and a constant stream of new mods), Id's modern take on Doom, and plenty of quality retro-style indie FPS now. There's plenty of choices.

I can see a point being made there about IF (or Dusk, for that matter) since that's pure Build to-the-bone (literally) experience, but Amid Evil, apart from having a retro vibe, plays fairly different from '90s shooters. That game is more than just the '90s with a facelift.
