DynamiteKaitorn Posted January 23, 2020 (edited) The sound of a plasma rifle emptying all 600 plasma shots. MMM. That sound makes me a happy pony. :) DSVILDTH <--- if this ever plays you KNOW I'm gonna party like it's 31/12/1999. And obviously if this ever plays: DSVILSIT I'm going to run so fast Sonic the Hedgehog is gonna need some MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE to keep up with me. Nevander Posted January 23, 2020 The fast door opening sound makes me nervous when I can't see or tell what opened. Bigass ambush incoming. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I especially like the Imps' weird gurgling, and I used to think it was the soulsphere that was making that noise as it sat there out of reach in E1M3. I used to think that too. Doom was a much more mysterious game back when I first started playing it. Not so much now, but it's still got that unique atmosphere of science fictional and fantastic elements. The maze-like architecture of some of the levels includes some impressively tenebrous techno-dungeons. I don't think there are any sounds in classic Doom that I find aesthetically displeasing, although the volume of the plasma gun firing is a bit obnoxious. The sounds I dislike I just do so by association; the skeletal screech of the Revenant, or that rising trill of the Archvile. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
SirJuicyLemon Posted January 24, 2020 I hate Lost Soul's scream And I love every other sound effect 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gradius Posted January 24, 2020 The plasma rifle, of course, has to die in a fire. It's just deafening in source ports. The pinkie snort and double-barrel shotgun are both incredibly satisfying though. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kyka Posted January 24, 2020 The only thing I disliked in regards to the classic sounds is that the plasma gun sound is much louder than the general volume of any dooming experience. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

I feel like a true warrior when I'm spamming it contrary to the Doom 3 plasma gun's sound which sound too weak for me. YES!!!! Someone shares my love for the vanilla Plasma sound. The sound just represents the power of the gun so well. You are firing a gun which spits out almost 12 balls of superheated plasma per second so you better make sure the sound corresponds with the sheer amount of firepower this gun represents. And that sound is perfect. And I always wondered why Arachnotrons don't have the same rate of fire as the player's Plasma. 15 hours ago, xvertigox said: I use the revenant death sound as my notification alert on my phone. No other sound will get you on your toes as quickly as that one. Revenants behind a corner is probably the most jump-scary Doom can get, along with -fast Spectres in dark areas. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Eurisko Posted January 24, 2020 22 hours ago, NoXion said: That's a good one, but the sound of an Arachnotron dying to a super shotgun blast is better because it's encountered less frequently. Very true. Hadn’t thought of that and an equally as satisfying sound 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

I use it even when using the BFG is more appropriate, for this reason and for the sheer chaos of blue lightning flying everywhere shredding everything up. I also love how when you're blasting at point-blank the impact sound mutes the firing sound. That just makes it extra satisfying to me for some reason. 15 hours ago, idbeholdME said: And I always wondered why Arachnotrons don't have the same rate of fire as the player's Plasma Because that would make them infuriating death-turrets. I mean, they are slow, have a wind-up, are super easy to interrupt (50% pain chance) forcing them to go through the wind-up again and all on top of having a ridiculously sized hitbox. At least it would make them THE enemy for area denial if you ignored them. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Mortrixs19 Posted January 27, 2020 (edited) I love the gibbing sound effect and the death scream of the baron of hell. I hate the revenant screams in Doom 2016 and the plasma gun firing sound in classic doom. Edited January 27, 2020 by Mortrixs19 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Summer Deep Posted January 27, 2020 (edited) The death sound of the Cacodemon and whoops of the Pain Elemental have always seemed silly and childish to me (or 'goofy', as another poster put it). The death noise made by the Realm 667 Cybruiser on the other hand is absolutely priceless. Some of the other sounds interest me as well. Does the Hell Knight really shout 'However!' when he's zapped? And what's the Archvile muttering, is it 'Uppahaha'? Also wondered what the IoS is on about when he first appears: first words sound something like 'Friend will die...' but I always struggle to make out any more (maybe because the appearance of this particular monster always instantly sends my blood pressure to about 300+... It's just tone-setting gibberish; there's nothing intelligible to hear within it. Spoiler In fact, it says "To win the game, you must kill me, John Romero!", played backward. He recorded the clip when he discovered that his head was used as the hidden sprite which serves as the actual thing that takes damage on behalf of the Icon. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Summer Deep Posted January 27, 2020 Also, that grunting/choking sound when the player is in lava or nukage is absolutely vile. I strongly dislike the presence of so-called 'damaging floors', especially when they're used to 'keep the player on the move', but hearing that sound often just makes me want to hit the 'exit' button and load up Half Life or something. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Stale Meat Posted January 28, 2020 Gotta say the SSG reload and rhythmic firing of the Rocket Launcher is peak satisfying. Not a huge fan of the Lost Soul alert noise though. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Tetzlaff Posted February 7, 2020 I don’t like the Imp‘s roaming sound. It sounds so inappropriate. For a time I thought it was supposed to be an ambient sound for slime pools bubbling. My favourite sound is the classic door sound. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Gez Posted February 7, 2020 DSPOSIT3 is the worst because it has very audible artifacts. I'm happy enough with the other vanilla sounds, but this one bugs me. In close second, that zombie idle that sounds just like DSPOSIT2 in PSX/N64 and mods that emulate them. When there's some dumb zombieman roaming around somewhere in the map who keeps making it sound like more zombies are waking up. Bastard. Best sound? DSSLOP when you're punching imps as a berserk-packing man-and-a-half. DSVIPAIN is always a pleasure to hear, especially when you're not the one shooting. I also always found DSMANDTH kinda hilarious and back in the Win95/Win98 days I used it as the system shutdown sound on my computer instead of the "TADA!" chime. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Arbys550 Posted February 7, 2020 I actually love the revenant alert sound. Nothing compares to the ear rape of 100 revs waking up right next to you. I love it. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Pixel Fiend Posted July 2, 2021 Anyone knows what's up with crusher sound being too loud? Is there a patch for that or what? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Somniac Posted July 2, 2021 I love the Arachnotron alert sound, and the death sound is very satisfying. Super shotgun. BOOM. Clunk clunk clunk. The Cyberdemon hoof sound. Also the BFG warm up sound before it fires the projectile. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Muusi Posted July 2, 2021 The ONLY sound effect that i don't replace with the PSX version is the dying Arachnotron sound. The PlayStation version is kinda toothless. The best sound in the game overall is the PSX version of the Mancubus preparing to fire. It sounds so gutteral and demonic, like the Mancubus is putrefying from the inside. No amount of praise is enough to describe the sound effects of PSX Doom. Did Hodges make the SFX too? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted July 2, 2021 1 hour ago, Muusi said: Did Hodges make the SFX too? Yes, though both Hodges and Prince took most of it from Sound Ideas General Series. And as I mentioned in a previous post, there's even one sound that's pretty much identical, but used slightly differently, and it maddens me. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Biz! Posted July 2, 2021 the sound of shotguns blasting in my mind after playing doom 1 so much wont get out I love it 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Smoothandz Posted July 2, 2021 The sound of the Shotgun/SSG triggers a wave of emotion for me. The heavy bass of the boom, the howls of pain from your enemy, and the reassuring sound of a quick reload all while the body slams into the ground. My simple brain just loves the whole experience. I believe Doom started my obsession with shotguns. (credit to FinfrOsk from Deviant Art for the photo) 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

out_of_service Posted July 2, 2021 The sfx for the Plasma Gun is intolerable, and so is the Arachnotron walking sfx and death sound. So aggravating every time I hear them. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
