Sena Posted July 2, 2021 I might never actually play multiplayer, but DSRADIO is peak sound design, doesn't get any better than that. On the contrary, I have a hard time playing any level that replaces the default doomguy grunts, for some reason people always insist on making the sound last longer than it takes for me to rapidly mash spacebar in search of a secret. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
HLRaven Posted July 3, 2021 I love Doomguy's grunts and pain sounds, and it's super hilarious hearing them in other games (Max Payne 1) 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Muusi Posted July 6, 2021 The PC Plasma Rifle is a horrible ear rape and doesn't sound like any energy weapon ever. As a balance, PSX Plasma Rifle sounds just like an energy weapon should sound like. PSX sounds are just better in every single way. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

BaileyTW Posted July 6, 2021 (edited) I think the plasma's fire sound is truly the only sound in the game I hate. Sure arachnotron walking sounds can get grating when there's a hell of a lot of em, but it lets me know they are there and makes me less likely to be blind sided by a barrage of plasma. The plasma's fire sound just makes me want to use the thing less. Situational awareness plummets the moment that fire button is pressed due to both the sound and the absolute size of those plasma balls. It's actually a huge buff to the plasma any time a wad replaces the sound and sprite of the plasma balls, it's that much of an issue. A close runner up would be multiple cyberdemon wake up sounds 30 minutes into a map. As for sounds I like. The revenant just in general has the best sound design of any enemy with the arachnotron slightly behind (the walking sound holds it back but I can appreciate the function the walking sound has). The SSG's sound is gold, the sound just has so much impact. The death sound of the cyberdemon has always been kinda wacky to me, just the death roar cut off by an explosion, kinda slapsticky I dunno. Chezza Posted July 6, 2021 I like the SSG shooting and item pickup sounds. Also the Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind alert sounds. I dislike the chaingun and plasmarifle shooting. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Final Verdict Posted July 6, 2021 The shotgun, SSG and BFG for the weapons. To be honest I like most of them, except the chaingun. I wish they had used something other than the pistol sound for it. It's not bad, it just could have been better. It lacks punch. In general Doom had some very good sound effects, especially when you consider when it was made. I can't think of any I dislike off the top of my head, even today they hold up well. That said, PSX Doom had far and away the best sound effects for Doom in my opinion. Both the weapons such as the plasma rifle and some of the monsters had improved sound. Zombiemen sounded better and even the Hellknight had a new and improved wake up sound. But the one that tops them all? The squelch of enemies being crushed beneath doors or blown asunder with the rocket launcher. Rarely have I heard such audio perfection. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Phobus Posted July 6, 2021 9 minutes ago, Final Verdict said: The squelch of enemies being crushed beneath doors This doesn't make a sound. As for me... Plasma Rifle is too loud, chaingun isn't beefy enough (and chaingunners should make the same sound the chaingun makes, whatever it is - Spider Mastermind firing with the shotgun sound is cool, mind, as it's a "super chaingun") and the Arachnotron walking sound is rather loud and can get cacophonous quite quickly. I'd quite like it if the Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind see/death sounds weren't always played over the full map, too, but the sounds themselves are great. On the positive side, the SSG is awesome and combines with the Demon death sound satisfyingly. I actually like a lot of the sounds in Doom, so that is picking a favourite out of a very strong field. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

pcorf Posted July 8, 2021 (edited) I like all the sounds in both PC and console versions of Doom. My favorites will have to be. - Mancubus pain sound. - Arch Vile pain sound. - A firing Chaingunner or Spiderdemon. - Revenant startup sound. - The Cyberdemon walking around. - When Lost Souls fight each other. Arrowhead Posted July 8, 2021 (edited) I gotta be honest, there's not a single Doom sound I don't like. I think Bobby Prince selected/edited/made one of the best collections of sounds in any video game. The fact that most mappers don't alter /modify the original Doom sounds is a testament to just how good they are. Edit: Although, ... the chaingun could sound deeper. It sounds a little piddly to my ear sometimes. Edited July 8, 2021 by Arrowhead 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

I love the PSX pistol, shotgun and plasma sounds more than the original PC sounds - but honestly, the longer version of the plasma sound in Dwango5 sounds better to me, because it “oscillates” for lack of a better word. Makes it sound all warbly which is perfect for an energy weapon! I don’t see why the sound was cut to be so short.. but long or short version, I still prefer it to the PC sound. I need to make a vanilla compatible wad that gives certain demons their PSX sounds and others their PC sounds. There’s a lot of re-use of sounds for different demon species in either instance, by combining the two it could ensure very few demons reuse sounds which would be very cool imo. Sound Caulking has a mod for vanilla that does this :P I load it up by default with any wad that doesn't have new monsters, it's highly underrated. https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/71133-sound-caulking-now-on-idgames/ Edited July 8, 2021 by TheMagicMushroomMan 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Are you saying sounds used in Dwango went to the PS1 port?! 9 minutes ago, Doomkid said: I need to make a vanilla compatible wad that gives certain demons their PSX sounds and others their PC sounds. I've given this some thought too. I loved how Doom Zero used the Arch-Vile pain sound for the Revenant too and that got me into thinking about mixing the PC and PSX sounds. Would be cool to maybe even randomize, like sometimes a monster could make the PSX wake up sound and sometimes the PC version... Would that be possible with dehacked? I mean, the zombies and imps already do that, right? 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
DavitW Posted July 8, 2021 The SSG reloading and the pinkies hitting the floor, satisfying. The arachnatron walking sound is the worst, just so damn loud and obnoxious. The arachnatron death sound is pretty good too though, especially with the sweet relief it brings. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted July 8, 2021 Yep, Dwango5 came first! Dwango was at peak popularity during PSX Doom development so I assume Hodges heard them, liked them and reused them (as Gez mentioned I’m sure they all originally came from a collection library of stock sounds). I also think the enemies randomly using either/or for sound effects would be the best of both worlds! I do think the zombie and imps having randomised sounds is a “hard coded” thing, though.. so you couldn’t apply the same effect to Barons, for example.. unfortunately! However the sound caulking that TMMM linked to (which I forgot existed til now) does sound like a decent middle ground. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Cruduxy Pegg Posted July 8, 2021 I have a lot of sounds I absolutely hate. Most of them are from Hexen and heretic - no not the dragon claw I love it- though and not Doom. 1) Mummy's shouting projectiles. SHUT UP STOP SCREAMING good lord. A lot of levels turn into screaming nonstop until your ears burst. This is easily the top sound in heretic to replace\remove altogether. Revenant projectiles don't scream, deal more damage and are still fine. 2) Every single sound except death sound used by Dark Bishops. Especially the sound their projectiles make when they hit walls. Combined with constant teleport sound and attack start sounds the game turns into a noise machine. I know it is good design to have sound cues to help players but these fuckers are placed in dozens at a time and killing them is a priority just to save your ears, doesn't help that they deal no damage to begin with so they are probably the last thing you want to prioritize. 3) The sound stalker projectiles make when they explode. It isn't the sound itself, but the fact they shoot even at walls is super irritating. If you don't know where they are you'll hear splats nonstop. 4) Wendigos attack sound. Stop shooting please. what the hell why is there 50 of them. 5) The sound the chainsaw makes when you swap weapon mid attack. I think most of the problem with these is the fact both games use a ton of monsters in each area so the games turn into a horrible sound clash in big battles. In Doom the fact there are fewer sounds at a time is probably the best thing it ever had to support bigger battles. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Pirx Posted July 8, 2021 the ssg and bfg going off are great, truly doom music. pistol sucks and chaingun is simply underwhelming, in both sound and rate of fire. should be something like the valiant / rudy chaingun. brrrrt. vanilla plasma gun is loud and irritating, something like the effect from sunlust in better, more like the terminator's phased plasma rifles. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Jayextee Posted July 10, 2021 DOOM sounds great. With one exception; and I actively refrain from using the weapon for it; the plasma gun's wall of noise. No. I can't even. In fact, of late I've taken to using a PlayStation DOOM sound pack to avert this entirely, as they're also good sounds (maybe less iconic on the whole though); with a very pleasant plasma firing effect. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Stupid Bunny Posted July 10, 2021 (edited) I think Doom has fantastic sound design and there’s not much I would change, and certainly nothing I think is properly bad. As a category the weapons are probably the most inconsistent, with the shotguns at one end having clearly the best weapon sounds in any game ever made. I think the pistol/chaingun sounds like bubble wrap and is kind of unsatisfying but I think I can see why they didn’t make it something louder and more percussive (and, honestly, I think a lot of us would be complaining if they had). The BFG is also a bit underwhelming and they probably could’ve afforded to dial up the excess in hearing it rip out of the gun. The chainsaw-switching noise is bizarre and jolting and maybe the one sound I’d have eliminated entirely from the game (or at least found a more appropriate moment to use). I hate the revenant ACT sound. It makes my heart jump every time I hear it. That’s what makes it amazing. Same with the arch-vile purr. In fact the monster sounds are probably collectively the best in the game and I can’t even single out any of them as especially perfect, although the bum-BOOM of an exploding pain elemental always feels and sounds so good. The arachnotron sounds are all weirdly alien/electronic for Doom monsters but I still like them, including the roboty stomps of their babby spider feet. The pickup and incidental sounds are all fine. Perfect for what they need to be. I do love the switch sound especially, always savor it a bit when I need to throw one. Weapon pickups are satisfying as hell too. Powerups a bit less so, could’ve gone with something a bit more exciting then a tiny gong hit. Doomguy’s “bad death” scream is so horrendous especially in the situations where I hear it that I can’t help but love it. Edited July 10, 2021 by StupidBunny 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
yakfak Posted July 10, 2021 I always try to replace the default scenery moving sound, that FFFFFF one is so boring. I like the chain clanks from Hexen much better. and replacing the plasma gun's firing sound with either a sped up version of the same thing or the classic Photon Torpedo sfx is more or less automatic to me. everything else is 10/10, one of the best things about the game 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
