BFG Edition isn't starting for me

Whenever I try to launch it, Steam goes through the "first time" setup and installs the Microsoft VC Redist Package, and then the green "play" icon turns to a blue "stop", while the menu to the left has the game title turn green with a "running" next to it, but after a few seconds they both go back to normal. I'm not sure if the problem is actually to do with Steam, because the same thing happens when I try to start Classic RBDoom3 BFG, but the frontend for that still works. Could my computer be missing something?

For starters you can try to run the game with the launch argument "+set r_fullscreen 0".

ON Steam/Vanilla: right click the game on the Steam Library select properties and click set launch arguments... 

ON Classic RBDoom3 BFG: use CDL.exe and add it to the additional parameters

 

P.S.: To get a little bit on the technical side the issue is usually that the game tries to access your monitor's available resolutions but for some reason it fails and and therefor fails to boot all together.
