The Play Station Doom Source Code Released! (Reverse Engineering)

Whoa, glad to finally get to know what's different in the Japanese release, even if only a single logo in the title screen. I wonder if anyone also has the Japanese release of Final DOOM to confirm the SSG sprite difference too.

The GT logo was used for the first versions of PsxDoom in the Greatest Hits version and Japan does not have the logo.

Oh interesting - that's good to know! I thought it was a PAL vs NTSC difference...

There is another edition to consider however, the 'Platinum' re-release that we had in Europe (European 'Greatest Hits' equivalent):

This one appears to still have the GT stuff on it, so not sure if it's the same in-game on the title screen. I assume the .EXE would be the same as 1.1 (Greatest Hits) but for PAL instead of NTSC. Anyone got this version to investigate? Also was there a 'Greatest Hits' equivalent in Japan?

There was. Over there it was called "The Best." Even later re-releases were done under a label of "PSone Books."

Doom, however, was never re-released in those forms in Japan, so there is no version of Doom with that over there - only the US/EU versions had a Greatest Hits/Platinum version re-release.

Any difference in the dates of the files on the Greatest Hits disc compared to the original release? I know that the Williams/Midway name switch happened at some point in 1997 so it would have to be from around then.

Good question, here's what I found for PSXDOOM.EXE (the main binary):

1.0 - PSXDOOM.EXE    1995-09-30 19:05
1.1 - PSXDOOM.EXE    1995-10-16 16:28

If the dates are to be believed (and I would take those with a grain of salt) then perhaps it suggests that the team kept working on the game for a bit after the initial build was submitted, fixing bugs and so forth. Perhaps they did this while waiting to get the OK on the build from Sony?

If changes were required to meet whatever submission standards Sony set then perhaps they figured they would slip in a few more bug fixes in that situation. And when the time came around to do the 'Greatest Hits' edition I guess they figured they already had a slightly more polished build so why not use it anyway. That's my theory on it at least...

Size and checksums would be more informative, as that date stamp may just come from when the disc was mastered.
