cbronson Posted July 18, 2011 Chaingunners. I can't remember the name, but one time I gave up on a very famous megawad (with some excellent map design) because it was INFESTED with them. Seriously, I think the author had some sort of fetish for the bastards. Ragequit, delete, empty trash can. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

TheStiCat Posted July 19, 2011 I hate the revenants most. Their missiles not only do a lot of damage, but they are heat-seekers. The hell with that. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Its only a problem if the WAD author is an asshole and decides to put them extremely far away from the player so that he can't just shot them. Like that early level in Doom core where there is a canyon with 2 revenants on the other side that shoot at you. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Zom-B Posted July 19, 2011 I hate the super shotgun guy the most. They are at about 3.3 times as tough (100hp) as normal shotgun guys and obviously do much more damage to you. When you load a mod with the extra monsters, they are randomly placed where shotgun guys would appear, so they appear relatively early in the levels. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Maes Posted July 19, 2011 Most custom monsters are ridiculously overpowered and unbalanced anyway. Perhaps the worst of the bunch that I've seen was that Pyro Cyberdemon used in that painful Doom 2 mish-mash by Masa: as soon as it spotted you, it set half of the level alight with fire damaging as a bfg blast to your face, and it was pretty much inescapable in a closed space. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Zom-B Posted July 19, 2011 Back to vanilla doom reality, i hate the baron the most, because they are tough as hell (pun intended). They ought have just made the baron 'bosses' super tough with normal barons having maybe 1.5-2x health of a hell knight. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Well, is there really a SSG guy in doom? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Maes Posted July 19, 2011 Zom-B said:normal barons having maybe 1.5-2x health of a hell knight. But that's already how their health ratios are (2x). From the wiki: Baron: 1000 HP Knight: 500 HP Having 1.5x health (750 HP) with the SSG in the game, would only mean a difference of one blast most of the time. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Zom-B Posted July 19, 2011 Hmm I see. The wiki also states that their attacks have the same hitpoints. The megawads I usually play (like Invasion UAC) have a baron who's attacks are more potent than the knight's, and their health is probably also boosted. (I'm not talking about the beet red Belphegor) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Jodwin Posted July 19, 2011 re all the revenant hate: There's actually a lot of good points about revenants as monsters:This one's been mentioned before, but their lower health makes them a good in-between monster between imps and knights. Similarly their higher pain chance makes them even more of an in-betweener. Their small frame makes them extra susceptible to splash damage in tight groups: Five revenants take less space as five knights do, so they fall faster to rockets (even if they had the same amount of health). They move faster than other similar monsters do. This, combined with their smaller hitbox, makes them ideal middle tier monsters to use in crate mazes and other similar areas. Their ability to avoid shots at longer ranges (thanks to the small hitbox and their speed) forces the player to get closer to the revenants. This makes the game more interesting and is a good thing. The revenants' preference to do melee at close distances makes dueling them in tight spaces an experience completely different from any other Doom monster. The homing missile. If they didn't have an attack different from the straight missile they'd be pointless monsters. If you have problems with dodging homing missiles go practice playing the game (it's not my fault if you suck at Doom). Revenants are one of the best monsters in the game (topped only by AVs, and sometimes mancs) since they're able to prevent the game from stagnating too much. Of course, just like with any other monsters revs too can be misused, but better used revs actually keep the game flowing by forcing you to get your ass moving. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

For all my Revenant hate, I definitely don't disagree with this statement. They are a good niche-filling monster when used properly. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
hex11 Posted July 19, 2011 Revenants would be worth going after if you could pickup their homing missile gear, but as it is I'd rather just stir up some shit and leave the other monsters take care of them. Those gangbangers aren't worth wasting any shells on. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
NiuHaka Posted July 19, 2011 I love killing them. It is worth it to me to use my ammo just to hear their death sound. Ammo wasted having fun sin't ammo wasted. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
kmxexii Posted July 19, 2011 I used to fear and loathe Revenants, but after trial by fire I've gotten very good at handling them. Especially after stuff like H2H-Xmas (alt. title: "Romancing the Revenant"). Pretty much everything Jodwin said is spot on. Also a group of Revenants activating at the same time nearby is one of the greatest aural stingers you can create in Doom. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
