Not necessarily a joke, just insult to injury. He was out stationed somewhere, and after the events of Doom 1, the demons invaded earth from his own hometown, killed his family, and stuck the family pet's head on a spike outside city limits to taunt him.

The more logical and canon compliant explanation of course is that it is a picture of Baby Slayer and his mother, Jane Doomgirl. The father figure is of course Commander Keen holding Billy DoomMarine's twin sister, Billie Keen, out of frame.

It's better than Virgin Marine that it's just angry at the demons for killing earth and THEY PET RABBIT.

Simply - as colonial Mars guard, there were no opportunity and since then he spent years in hell, not succumbing to daemonettes obviously. Then - divinity engine. To be fair, Doom's story wasn't considered that deeply besides a simple "unfinished" premise and Doomguy was partially a blank slate.

Plus, Daisy is technically iconic in his part and the "virgin" thing is sourced from a potentially made up screenshot for memes.

 

The idea of Doomguy having a family that died does seem like something that would be in the cancelled Doom 4, because it sounds like a modern FPS/COD or even Hollywood cliche.

Quake Champions technically does it too for Ranger but i don't think his family died. (i think he stated to have forgotten his kids' names, tho)

In some way, it's ironic because the lore of the Slayer also goes hard with its own sci-fi and fantasy elements.

Either Doomguy spontaneously spawned on E1M1 without having any backstory at all, or you have a Hollywood cliché.

To be honest I'm more up in arms about how they teased us with nunchucks in the Fortress of Doom. I was hoping, praying, that at some point in the DLC's we would be able to use those bad boys. Instead we got a sledgehammer and roller derby imps. Hopefully in the next Doom reboot/remake we'll be able to send demons on a one way trip to nunchuck city

You know, it is like Boybands, many are not allowed to show that they have a Girlfriend/Wife, to not throw off Fans :P

 

But to be serious, Companies and their Artists have to learn to let Things just stay in the Dark.

Be it the Background of the Doomguy or the Background of Hell.

A "Lore" demystifies Stuff and makes it boring, instead of making it richer.
