Doom Eternal PC requirements?

Hello community!

Does anyone know if Doom Eternal is going to demand the same requirements from Doom (2016) or if it's gonna require more PC gaming juice?

 

Knowing that Doom (2016) was id Tech 6 and Eternal is going to be id Tech 7, I've looked upon the differences between both and here's what I found on the improvements of id Tech 7 compared to 6 (according to Wikipedia; yeah, give me my "Best researcher" award):

 

  • 1 million fewer lines of code mostly due to the removal of the OpenGL render-engine
  • Unified HDR lighting and shadowing
  • Multi PBR material compositing, blending, and painting
  • Improved image quality, level of geometric detail, and global illumination
  • Increased texture fidelity due to removal of MegaTexture pipeline, used since id Tech 4
  • Majorly improved particle system as more particles are running on the GPU, which allows for bigger explosions, more atmospheric volumetrics and more vibrant particle effects
  • The framerate limit has been upped to 1000 FPS. Was 200 FPS in id Tech 6
  • Rewrote the jobs-system to use all available CPU-cores more efficiently
  • Improved post-processing effects, more detailed anti-aliasing and improved motion blur
  • Support for gameplay areas twice the size of those in id Tech 6

 

Also, it says that "On PC, id Tech 7 will support Vulkan rendering only". I'm an ignorant in this field so I don't really know what all this means.

 

Just by reading and using logic, it all sounds like, in a nutshell, id Tech has been improved and optimized in some ways, so it sounds as if it's gonna require a little more of PC requirements in the best case scenario.

 

I'm mainly worried about my CPU as it's the oldest piece of my PC (ye olde FX-6300, and it obviously need a BFH[Big F*cking Heatsink] to run Doom), standing with side by side with a GTX 1050 Ti (pretty good for me) and 8gb of RAM (It... could be better): with this setup I could play Doom (2016) really smootly and nice! I had some solid 60 FPS (not sure if they were exactly 60, but everything seemed really fluid!) and it looked nice (probably wasn't on Ultra or anything, but it looked great anyways)

 

But as the 8th point explains, it seems that it has been optimized for CPUs, and the engine in some other aspects was kind of optimized, but graphically improved overall, which I hope it just affects my GPU, which I hope has a better performance threshold/tolerance as I can probably squeeze my GPU a little bit more than before, unlike my CPU which was suffering the fire from hell while running Doom (2016).

 

It's my interpretation correct in some way? Is there any other fact that you want to add?
What are your thoughts on this? What is your case, in case that you will play Doom Eternal on PC, will it affect it a lot in your PC performance?

I think you should be good as long as you set the options properly. And your gfx card supports Vulkan, just make sure you use the latest Nvidia drivers when the game comes out.

 

It seems they focus on optimisation, it should be another great engine gfx-wise and performance-wise!

A quick Google search brings only predicted requirements which is all anyone has currently. Your cpu may struggle judging by these.

So, Vulkan only. Good to hear. One game that really may help drive some obsolete hardware out of the market.

Eh, don't be so sure. Not everyone is willing to upgrade for just one game (or even have the funds), so those will just avoid it altogether or get it on consoles.

 

But BTW, what was the first generation of NVIDIA/AMD cards to suppor Vulkan? I see 1.1 and 1.2 are supported by Kepler and above here - https://developer.nvidia.com/vulkan-driver

 

As for the topic, that PC should be okay-ish, but I'm not sure about that CPU, that's probably not going to be enough. I would also not be surprised if it goes for 16GB of RAM as recommended, seems triple-A games are going for that these days.

Now that the new Doom game is Vulkan-only, more Vulkan-only games will be released.

In all honesty, Keplar (GTX-600 series) is from 2012. Anyone who wishes to run Doom Eternal should own atleast post-2012 level hardware.

I don't object to that at all, I was just saying that Eternal won't change things much. Who doesn't have the funds to invest in new hardware will either give it a pass or buy it on console, there's only a few who upgrade their PCs to play the newest things.

 

I won't be playing it either, just like I didn't play 2016 on my machine - not because of old hardware, but underpowered.

I just hope Doom Eternal works smoothly on PS4 since my PC  can't handle shit :D

I doubt that any sane developer will these days release an OpenGL title, except maybe some indies running their game on an old engine,

We are not talking about a 3 or 4 year old system but an 8-10 year old system. I think a title like Doom Eternal will definitely move a few graphics cards, if not some entirely new systems. Of course it won't get rid of all old hardware, but every retired system counts.

Oh, I'm not saying that it won't, but do note that those are more likely going to be part of the "keep up with the latest releases" crowd, who would've upgraded anyway. Someone who hasn't upgraded their PC for over 6yrs will definitely not do it now, and most certainly not for just one new game.

 

I won't do it either with my 3yrs old PC, because I made some poor choices when I bought it... and those prevent me from upgrading (not like I had the money anyway, and I would also like to transition to SSD and retire traditional HDDs, no money for that either. It's cool to be forever bankrupt... ).

Yeah, didn't buy a new PC for Doom 2016, not gonna buy a new PC for Doom Eternal either.

 

I'd like to replace my PC eventually, because my current one is getting old and moody, but that'll have to wait until I have actual money for that.

Having had to turn my PC down from 4k to 1080p (keeping everything else maxed out) for Rage 2, I anticipate being in a similar situation for Doom Eternal, which is fine. The Palit GameRock GTX 1080 I've got produces a lot of heat when it's really working hard and can cause issues (usually just dropping me straight to the desktop after some throttling) at 4k with the most demanding games. 32GB of decent RAM and an i7-6700K running at about 4.12GHz are pretty good, although I imagine the latter will need an upgrade along with the graphics card in the next few years if I want to keep living the 4k dream on brand new games. I can't say I mind 1080p though. Especially with every setting maxed out, things tend to look very nice and run very smoothly.

 

Looking at the OP's spec, the GTX 1050 Ti has Vulkan covered, so you should be good. The CPU and RAM will be your bottle necks, if you do run into any trouble, but I suspect it'll auto-detect something for you (or NVidia's GeForce Experience can/will optimise your settings) and you'll be all good. If you got a smooth run out of Doom 2016, you'll probably have a similar experience for Eternal, but with minor, possibly-perceptibly lower settings if you want to keep frame rates up in the larger or more complex areas... Or when there's more going on on-screen.
