Doom: SNES vs. GBA vs. 32x

Recommended Posts

Doom Snes: No textures on ceiling, very low resolution, terrible performance issues, deaf monsters that always face you, and you can't circle strafe.
Doom GBA: Fully textured, same vertical resolution as the SNES version, performs decently, deaf monsters but they don't always face you, and you can circle strafe.
Doom 32x: Fully textured, higher resolution than SNES or GBA, performs decently, deaf monsters that always face you, and you can't strafe at all.

What he meant is, that you can't get behind the enemy by circlestrafing around, because the enemies always look directly at you.

32X Doom has a single button as a strafe modifier. You hold down the C button and then press left or right to strafe. That means you cannot strafe and turn ... so you cannot circle strafe.

Look at the controls here: Even with a 6-button controller you can't circle strafe. /facepalm

And if you use the 3-button controller you have to scroll through weapons one-way by a key combo!

SNES Doom had its problems but the levels weren't cut back like they were for Jaguar and derived ports.  I played Pandemonium in PSX Doom and was like, half the damn level is gone.

The worst thing about SNES Doom is the chaingun.  It's just weird.

I always appreciated that they maintained the integrity of the levels and bestiary.

But yeah, the sound of the chaingun firing is reminiscent of someone banging on the side of a steel drum with a 2x4.
