Serafettin6 B Posted March 11, 2020 The original edition or the BFG edition? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gerardo194 Posted March 11, 2020 The original one... I love it. But if I wanted to play it on my ps4 someday, that would be BFG edition of course... There's nothing I can't do... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
MadGuy Posted March 11, 2020 BFG (Not that I am biased by my own port or anything) 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
markanini Posted March 11, 2020 BFG plays slightly closer to Doom 1 & 2 and I like that. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
scalliano Posted March 11, 2020 OG, and that includes the OG Xbox port. BFG just altered/removed too many elements for my taste, especially in RoE. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Tetzlaff Posted March 12, 2020 Original version. The ammo balance is tighter and the survival horror influence is realised better. Plus it has all the custom content available. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Vermil Posted March 12, 2020 Original; it was the intended way to experience the game. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Duke of Pathoris Posted March 12, 2020 BFG edition. It's easier to see and I appreciate the extra ammo. It actually feels like a classic doom game. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
NoXion Posted March 12, 2020 (edited) I have the BFG edition on Steam. How would I go about legally acquiring the originals? Edited March 12, 2020 by NoXion 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

D88M3R Posted March 13, 2020 Obviously the original version, is the better one. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
MFG38 Posted March 13, 2020 BFG Edition for the shoulder-mounted flashlight, original for everything else. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
fufu Posted March 13, 2020 Original, i found most of bfg edition changes pointless I don't see how putting more ammo and duct-taping the flashlight makes it more like classic doom. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
KainXavier Posted March 14, 2020 For DOOM 3, the limited collector's edition for Xbox. For Resurrection of Evil, either the original PC version or the Xbox version. For everything else, the DOOM BFA source port. :) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

KainXavier Posted March 14, 2020 (edited) @Tetzlaff The biggest difference is that the Xbox version of DOOM 3 shipped with online co-op. (That feature's never made it into any other port, not counting mods.) The limited collector's edition was extra swanky in that it came with both Ultimate DOOM and DOOM II. Each game also had an additional secret level. (See Sewers and Betray.) One other minor thing that I think is pretty cool is that you can kill the Cyberdemon without using the Soul Cube in co-op. Agentbromsnor Posted March 14, 2020 Doom 3 on the original XBox was actually the first version of the game I've ever played! I really loved it back then, and I still have a bit of an affinity for it. It cut some corners, yes, but it's still a very playable port of the game that keeps the overall core of the game intact and I think that's respectable. As far as the PC versions are concerned, I'm afraid I only ever played the vanilla version. I haven't heard many positive things about the BFG edition, so that made me hesitant to buy it. I'll admit I'm very curious to play that Lost Episode or whatever that was called. I'm a little bit sad that they tried to walk back on the design decisions that they've made for Doom 3 with the BFG edition; the original was a bit too dark, yes, but the darkness was also its defining feature in my opinion. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Plasma Slayer Posted March 15, 2020 The original PC version! BFG edition unbalances the original, diluting the experience significantly. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I've been wondering about this for a while. What if the OG was darkened for other reasons? Because the E3 demo was noticeably shinier than the darkness we ended up with in the final product. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

famicommander Posted March 15, 2020 Both are terrible games as far as single player but at least BFG Edition on 360 came with a splitscreen multiplayer version of the classic Doom games that was easy to access. Splitscreen Doom rules and it's not that easy to set up on PC sourceports, especially if you're a Linux guy like I am. But now that the modern console versions are out, that makes this feature obsolete too. I'll never understand how anybody enjoys either version of Doom 3 singleplayer. If you compare it to contemporary 2003-2006 FPS games, it doesn't hold up. If you compare it to the classic Doom 1993-1997 Doom games, it doesn't hold up. If you compare it to modern games, it doesn't hold up. It was just a tech demo they slapped a corridor jumpscare simulator onto. It's not fun as an action game, it's not fun as a horror game. It's just not fun. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
KainXavier Posted March 16, 2020 (edited) @famicommander I feel like DOOM 3, more so than any other game in the series, establishes a sense of dread. You are utterly alone. Everyone you meet either dies or becomes corrupted. Everytime a new monster is introduced, it's done in a way to make you fearful. It makes the feeling of isolation intensify. I also feel like DOOM 3 does a better job with its "boss" encounters than DOOM 1 and DOOM 2. They feel distinct from one another and with two exceptions, you don't ever fight those creatures again. It makes the whole experience more impactful. I agree that the action could be better and that the monster closets / jump scares feel cheap, but DOOM 3 still nails the horror aspect for me because of its atmosphere. To me there's no dread because there's no tension. The game is easy and supplies are plentiful enough that I don't ever really feel in danger. It's not really a horror game, it's just a slow and boring shooter. To me, Doom 64 is the real Doom 3. Doom 3 has no redeeming qualities, especially in 2020. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
seed Posted March 16, 2020 (edited) Well, that's pretty harsh tbh. At the very least the sound design and atmosphere of the game are great. What killed the game off IMO, is the fact that they made it way too predictable and tried to scare the player non-stop with lame jumpscares, and the fact that the combat feels like you're never, ever in control only adds insult to the injury. Robo_Cola Posted March 16, 2020 The original version and it's not even close. BFG edition give you too much ammo and breaks how the game was meant to be played where you had to originally rely on your flashlight. Gmanlives did a video on it and goes more into detail, you should definitely watch it. Besides that, you're gonna need the original version if you want to play with mods. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lila Feuer Posted April 3, 2020 (edited) Original, BFG edition is trash and it's upsetting that the original version can only be bought/played on Steam and wasn't ported again. Edited April 3, 2020 by Lila Feuer 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
kristus Posted April 3, 2020 The original PC version ofc, I don't even know why they added more resources, I always wished Doom3 gave the player less resources. Never more. Best experience I've had in Doom3 was with the expansion, where I played the game through without using the artifact unless the game absolutely forced you to do so. Which were at only a couple of places. At least to my understanding. 1st being right after you got the bullet time ability. Couldn't make it past those traps without it. 2nd being the final boss, the maledict. I couldn't take him out with the artifact. The hell hunter bosses were really cool when you had to apply your wits and skill to beat them without the artifact. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
