Riv Posted March 12, 2020 Was there ever a level that made you take a break out of tiredness or frustration? 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
VGA Posted March 12, 2020 At that cliff very early on in Plutonia where you have to deal with some Revenants on the opposite side while having only a bit of space and then shoot a hidden switch and then walk on an invisible bridge ... I was like ... HUH?! 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gerardo194 Posted March 12, 2020 None... I only quit the session when I wanna do something else or go to sleepĀ 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
noisebloom Posted March 12, 2020 (edited) Even though the original Doom is pretty easy by today's standards, after ending back at the same corner of Halls of the Damned for the third time, I'd say "fuck it" and give up. Edited March 12, 2020 by noisebloom 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Lila Feuer Posted March 12, 2020 Some PWAD back in 2009 that locked me off almost immediately. I gunned down a couple Imps and then had no idea what to do or where to go. I was probably less observant then, but I couldn't open or use anything so I was like fuck this and quit lol. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Job Posted March 12, 2020 Usually Map 09 of Doom 2, that's when I start to get bored. I can usually play up until E2M2 of Doom before I reach that point.Ā 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Murdoch Posted March 12, 2020 (edited) A few in Doom 64 (which I still have not managed to bring myself to finish). There was one in particular, around map 5 or 6 I think, that really drove me nuts. An annoyingly obtuse designĀ with a gameplay flow about as smooth as a Texas backroad after an 8.2 earthquake. Go into one bit. Find a switch. Flip it. Get no clue whatsoever about what it did.Ā Run back to the centre bit. Finally figure out what it did. Repeat until you stumble upon the exit or lose the will to live. Awful map. 666shooter Posted March 12, 2020 I quit a couple times (actually restarted about 4) in the last map of Paradise, because I couldn't figure out how to deal with the archvile room or get around the ambush. Also just quit the third Speedmap of the same, realizing for the small sense of acomplishment I'm getting grinding through this on Tough, this Wad just isn't any fun, despite how much I love Supercharge. Also dropped the Alfonzone on Map 4...5... the end with the Berserk pack that traps you in the exit room corner and sends a line of revenants and an archvile at you. That's when I realized combat was only going to get dumber and dumber from there. After being lost aimlessly for the past two maps, that was it for me. Usually if I am having fun, I can push through a tough combat scenario with enough practice (or save-scumming if its just being broken hard), but I tend to quit more often from being hopelessly lost, because then I just get bored. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I think its Map 13 maybe where you can lock yourself in the yellow key room at the start with no way out if you turn the wrong way. That definitely made me want to quit, then the trap you can't survive without the hidden invulnerability. That's just bad level design! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Job Posted March 12, 2020 Oh, I forgot, probably via subconscious self-preservation mechanism, I probably got about 35-40% (just estimating) through Swim With The Whales before I gave up on the map altogether. Gorgeous map, absolutely punishing gameplay. That's the real brutal Doom.Ā 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Andromeda Posted March 12, 2020 In the last two years, only one level achieved that feat, none other thanĀ Alien Vendetta MAP26. I eventually beat it the next day though. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Solmyr Posted March 12, 2020 (edited) Map 20 "Misri Halek" from Alien Vendetta, maybe i just have shit sense of orientation when it comes to Doom, but i always get lost, develop a headache, then rage quit.Ā Map 12 "Dead End"Ā from Going Down, rage quitted once near the end when the map evolved into a mini slaugthermap. Habitat from TNT Evilution and Map 23 "Tombstone" from Plutonia comes to mind. I don't remember quitting in other megawads.Ā Ā Ā Edited March 12, 2020 by Solmyr 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

galileo31dos01 Posted March 12, 2020 Yeah, the map in Harmony that's all minotaurs gave me such a headache that I quite the wad for months. Looking back at the map in question, the problem I had was the lack of ammo to kill every single one of them, whichĀ later I figured out it was a waste of energy when only those that wall up progress needed to die. Plus their abilities make them overwhelming quickly in close quarters, because they drop explosives on the ground that have a slightly larger hitbox than what the sprite might suggest. Ā IIRC couple maps in Urania caused me to double my dose of imaginary anti-stress pills. Only a couple though, maybe map 32, I think I dropped map 24 more than once. Quoting myself from three years ago:Ā Ā Quote Save, reload, save, reload, save, reload, save, reload, and so on... It's not a bad level, it's just that there were many frustrated moments. I think the beginning can be too harsh if you're low of ammo (luckily, I wasn't) and, how glad I am to be playing continuous because I would not stand this map as a pistol starter. Ā Very true. On the other hand it's been a while so maybe nowadays I can handle the wad more pacifically. Also I meant "frustrating" there. Ā Pretty sure there have been plenty other excuses for me to feel too salty and take a break. I know a wad called Earth had more annoyance than entertainment in just 10 maps, so that's one I never finnished in good terms. I may revisit it someday just for giggles. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
