Hunting4r2d2 Posted March 26, 2020 Just finished the game and though it was amazing. Not sure if i like it more than Doom 2, but damn it's easily in my top 3 favorite Doom games. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheRedTide Posted March 26, 2020 I finally got this thing to work and I'm really liking the flow of the gameplay, every combat is relentless. What I don't like however is constantly having to remind myself to chainsaw zombie fodder to get more ammo, the platforming sections and the overly arcadey aesthetics of certain items like ammo and health pickups, and those huge radioactive green switches. Overall, it's worth every cent. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
xdarkmasterx Posted March 26, 2020 (edited) I beat the game a couple of days ago, so here's what I liked and didn't about the game (minor gameplay spoilers) Spoiler Liked: + Combat: I wasn't expecting to like all the abilities and cooldowns as much as I did. They might be a little overwhelminga t first, but when you wrap your head around it you end up feeling super badass as you fly about the room and destroy everything without being touched + Higher difficulty: Self explanatory ;) + Environments: Mars Core and Super Gore nest in particular are really impressive. + Optional challenges: The Slayer Gates are epic. Unsure: / Boss fights: They had more limited sets of attacks than they did in the old game, and compensated with constantly spawning enemies instead. There's something about fighting one big, strong opponent with lots of attacks that's lost when you have to constantly turn around and kill some annoying little fucker shooting you in the back. They still had some cool and creative moves though (Gladiator's energy wave attack was the best one). Disliked: - Linearity: The levels were even more linear than they were in 2016 (nothing like Foundry) - No ammo refils for time trials. whyyyy ;( Conclusion: One of the best games I've played in the last decade, very pleasantly surprised Edited March 26, 2020 by xdarkmasterx 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Antroid Posted March 26, 2020 (edited) Re: the boss thing, they have game-designed themselves into a corner on that one because without the annoying fuckers you would never have anywhere close to enough ammo (prolly between all your guns) to take down a boss. In Doom 2016, they had the boss drop health/ammo if you dealt enough damage to it. I'm guessing they changed it for Eternal because they wanted to test player's ability to farm for resources while under heavy fire. Personally, I prefer having enemies fight alongside bosses, since I tend to find standalone bosses easier in most games. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
ENEMY!!! Posted March 27, 2020 (edited) In general I've been very impressed - all of my gripes with DOOM 2016 appear to have been addressed. Although there is still an emphasis on wave based gameplay, to me it doesn't feel as tightly controlled as in DOOM 2016 and there is a wider range of "right" ways to approach battles. The checkpoint-only save system isn't discouraging me from exploring so far, aided by the relatively frequent checkpoints and the system of, when you mistime jumps and fall to your death, starting you off right next to the spot that you jumped from but "fining" you about 10 health, giving you several chances before you get sent back to the previous checkpoint (or at least that's how it's come across so far). It also helps a lot in those platforming sections where jumping is necessary in order to progress, although I agree with many others that the platforming sections are less satisfying than most other parts of the game. There have been some niggles, notably the fact that I had accumulated three extra lives by the time I reached Exultia and had to waste them all because I ended up confronted with an Arachnotron with no weapons and insufficient charge on my chainsaw, and had killed all of the other monsters, and it kept respawning me in this state, which meant that I was limited to trying to punch the Arachnotron to death until all of my lives ran out and it brought me back to the previous checkpoint. Maybe I just got very unlucky there, but I'll have to see if the extra lives system works better later on. I think they've done a great job "nailing" the look, giving it a mix of modern detail and nostalgic Doominess, and I particularly dig the design of the new Cacodemon, which reminds me a lot of how intimidating the original Cacodemon was when I played the original Doom for the first time as a child. Deleted_Account Posted March 27, 2020 Well I finally beat Doom Eternal and I am absolutely blown away by it. id Software went above and beyond here to craft a wonderful game that made me feel like playing the original Doom all over again. You can really tell they had fun building Eternal. Definitely going to revisit this game! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
