Well this is weird, i searched the name on mobygames to see if that person maybe worked on other ID game and i didn't found nobody with that surname, the closest thing i found was a dude called David Spell who worked as a sound designer on a quake 2 mod.

i guess this is going to turn into a creepypasta or something.

Easiest way to find out is write an email to Romero, he is generally really good about answering any questions. I sent him 2 emails before and he answered quite fast each time.

I guess this is probably just some kinda fuckup or wrong info, because, well, Wikipedia ain't perfect.

Found this doing a quick Google search, but again, this might be some weird typo or error that happened for whatever reason.

I sent John Romero an email. Just gotta wait now.

Got email back from John:

Quote

Hello,

There was no such person named David Shanbell at our company, ever. Someone put this fictional person’s name on Wikipedia and it should be removed from Doom’s entry.

Cheers,

John

Awesome. Dude doesn't fuck around.

Yeah, Romero is really good with answering stuff fast. I guess atm he might be a bit quicker even, because of the whole Corona stay inside situation.

Or could possibly be the name of the dude who ID hired to pose for the Iconic Main artwork photo, Because i remember that they did hire a actor for it but John Romero stepped in because he couldn't do what John thought was appropriate for the pic

Bump because we got an answer now. I guess someone with a Wikipedia account can edit it.

Pretty sure you don't need a Wikipedia account to edit most Wikipedia pages. Indeed the person who made this very edit didn't have an account.

No i believe they scrapped this a while back for this exact reason

Why would he be listed under design though. And again, John wrote me that no one under that name worked at id ever. I think it is from that book I linked on google books. Just someone messing up there and then someone else finding that and putting it on wikipedia.

You don't need an account, sure, but you are forced to reveal your IP. I'll say that faking your IP is more complicated than just registering and edit.

No idea, But i have read the book and it does infact credit him as one of the Designers, HOWEVER if we take a look at the Doom 1 game's credits:

(He is literally no where to be found)

So this could be 2 possible things:

1. Some dickhead put himself as a credit because they think it's funny

2. There was a person who did work at ID for a very brief moment and either was fired or left. (and John's memory is wrong)

I personally think #1 is more likely

I just tested it by correcting some grammar on a random Wikipedia page, and you don't need to log in. But as The_NoobGamer points out, revealing your IP is probably worse than having to sign up for free.

Use a VPN while editing it?

Most likely, the cause-effect relationship is the opposite: the editors of that book, released on this year, included that bogus info extracted from that article.

Yeah, that's why I said

So enter the fake ip of the vpn while editing it.

Should be okay?

Edit: I went to the page, Ctrl+F David Shanbell and didn't find it. Somebody's edited it and removed his name, the job's done.

@Good-Old of course it's okay, lol. I'm just saying that the method is more complicated and risky (vpns aren't all trustworthy imho)

Anyway let's not derail this thread further, the original topic has been answered.

Ah, did not look at the release date of the book. Yeah that sounds about right.
