Doomkid Posted March 26, 2020 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_(1993_video_game) Under designers, a person named "David Shanbell" is listed. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention, but I have never heard this name. Cane anyone elaborate on this? I see no results on the Doomwiki. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
SiFi270 Posted March 26, 2020 It's an alias for the Dimensional Shambler they hired to wait at the DOS prompt in case anyone thought about quitting. 15 Quote Share this post Link to post
fufu Posted March 26, 2020 Well this is weird, i searched the name on mobygames to see if that person maybe worked on other ID game and i didn't found nobody with that surname, the closest thing i found was a dude called David Spell who worked as a sound designer on a quake 2 mod. i guess this is going to turn into a creepypasta or something. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
ptoing Posted March 26, 2020 (edited) Easiest way to find out is write an email to Romero, he is generally really good about answering any questions. I sent him 2 emails before and he answered quite fast each time. I guess this is probably just some kinda fuckup or wrong info, because, well, Wikipedia ain't perfect. Found this doing a quick Google search, but again, this might be some weird typo or error that happened for whatever reason.https://books.google.de/books?id=olbPDwAAQBAJ&pg=PA214&lpg=PA214&dq=david+shanbell+doom&source=bl&ots=-pyybj24M2&sig=ACfU3U39fgxT_GGv2w4As0TIaxBUP3bkNQ&hl=de&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjn_-nTpbjoAhXF-aQKHWygD60Q6AEwCHoECAgQAQ#v=onepage&q=david shanbell doom&f=false Edited March 26, 2020 by ptoing 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Revenant100 Posted March 26, 2020 The name was added in this edit by this user, obviously a very reputable editor and/or hack fraud. Maybe this Shanbell guy knows who Mike Dopud is, a name which took nearly eight years for someone to notice! 9 Quote Share this post Link to post
ptoing Posted March 26, 2020 (edited) I sent John Romero an email. Just gotta wait now. Got email back from John: Quote Hello, There was no such person named David Shanbell at our company, ever. Someone put this fictional person’s name on Wikipedia and it should be removed from Doom’s entry. Cheers, John Edited March 26, 2020 by ptoing 12 Quote Share this post Link to post
ptoing Posted March 26, 2020 Bump because we got an answer now. I guess someone with a Wikipedia account can edit it. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
doomsucksass Posted March 26, 2020 (edited) But then...it turned out...David Shanbell was Doomguy all along!!! Edited March 26, 2020 by doomsucksass 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted March 27, 2020 Wonderful work fellas. I knew that name sounded fishy. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Deleted_Account Posted March 27, 2020 It's probably just Tim Willits messing with the Wikipedia. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Morpheus666 Posted March 27, 2020 Or could possibly be the name of the dude who ID hired to pose for the Iconic Main artwork photo, Because i remember that they did hire a actor for it but John Romero stepped in because he couldn't do what John thought was appropriate for the pic 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Pretty sure you don't need a Wikipedia account to edit most Wikipedia pages. Indeed the person who made this very edit didn't have an account. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

And again, John wrote me that no one under that name worked at id ever. I think it is from that book I linked on google books. Just someone messing up there and then someone else finding that and putting it on wikipedia. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I'll say that faking your IP is more complicated than just registering and edit. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

No idea, But i have read the book and it does infact credit him as one of the Designers, HOWEVER if we take a look at the Doom 1 game's credits: (He is literally no where to be found) So this could be 2 possible things: 1. Some dickhead put himself as a credit because they think it's funny 2. There was a person who did work at ID for a very brief moment and either was fired or left. (and John's memory is wrong) I personally think #1 is more likely Edited March 27, 2020 by Morpheus666 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Morpheus666 Posted March 27, 2020 (edited) @Bauul and if you are editing something major it's constantly being monitored by the Wiki Staff to make sure it's "Accurate" or as accurate as a Wikipedia page can be. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Lamest_edit_wars#Images Enjoy Wikipedia's long and ignorant history on Edits to pages Edited March 27, 2020 by Morpheus666 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Good-Old Posted March 27, 2020 (edited) So enter the fake ip of the vpn while editing it. Should be okay? Edit: I went to the page, Ctrl+F David Shanbell and didn't find it. Somebody's edited it and removed his name, the job's done. Edited March 27, 2020 by Good-Old 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheNoob_Gamer Posted March 27, 2020 @Good-Old of course it's okay, lol. I'm just saying that the method is more complicated and risky (vpns aren't all trustworthy imho) Anyway let's not derail this thread further, the original topic has been answered. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
