Chip Posted April 10, 2020 How about the TI-83 console port, that thing doesn't even have music! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

The first level is almost impossible too, it is very easy to run out of ammo and you take a lot of damage very quickly (also cheap drone attack almost as soon as you begin playing!). The demos show the player clearly cheating as well. Classy. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

On a side note, I remember reading that a 32X version of Daytona USA was in development, before Sega quickly realized that a 32X Daytona would suffer from even worse pop-up than the Saturn version, and look worse in every other way besides. There was another FPS (you were a mech) for the 32X called Metal Head, that actually looked pretty cool in screenshots...but suffered from being slow, choppy, and lots of pop-up during gameplay...the 32X was being pushed to its absolute limits for that game. The original Virtua Fighter for the 32X was somehow pretty good. Virtua Racing was too. Basically, the 32X was so limited in what it could do well, that it just seems impossible to think that the Genesis could’ve ever seen a remotely passable version of Doom...it just wasn’t meant to handle that kind of tech. If a Genny Doom had ever come out, it would have been remembered for all of the wrong reasons. And that would’ve been a shame, mostly because the Genesis had plenty of terrific games, and as we saw with Vectorman and other titles, was certainly capable of plenty solid visuals. Loved my Genesis back in the day (bought one in 1990, off a bud). 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Better resolution, better use of color, better frame rate, better controls, better sound effects, better lighting, less censorship. The only thing those versions have over the Jag version is in-level music. The GBA port is literally a downgraded version of the Jaguar port. The SNES port is nearly unplayable at this point. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

JagDoom is also the source of the truncated levels that came with most console ports (except SNES) until the Xbox came along. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Well PS1 Doom's levels are currently being remade with the console's limitations in mind. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

LateNightPerson Posted April 22, 2020 Imo the worst is 32X. First off, it's missing the entirety of Episode 3. It's missing the BFG9000 (you can only get it through cheats). The music sucks ass (you can turn it off though). The guns just feel too fast for me. The colors are bland (pink letters). There are many glitches (missing wall in level 10, DOS prompt ending, etc.). The only good thing I can say about the port is that it runs well. 3DO just has a shit framerate and poor controls, but has all of the levels, the BFG9000, and great music. This makes the 3DO version a more complete experience imo. The SNES version has a spot in my heart because it was my first exposure to Doom. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

DrZlooooo Posted April 23, 2020 Hello! In my opinion SNES version is the worst. Yeah, 3DO port is horrible in terms of performance, but it sounded and looked very well. If the only one programmer, who ported Doom to 3DO, had much more time maybe we've seen one of the best ports, at least not so bad in performance. SNES version not much faster than 3DO port, has poor visual look, strange soundtrack. Anyway, it's been a bad idea to port Doom to 16-bit consoles, IMHO (but I must admit that 32X version runs surprisingly smoothly). Have a great day, the person who read this! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Funny thing is that many people actually liked the SNES soundtrack and thought it was a pretty good interpretation. I sure did. Anyway, easily 3DO. SNES Doom was definitely limited, but it was at least playable (if barely) - I certainly did it fine as a ten year-old. 3DO Doom... playable is kind of generous. This video shows the game at its fullest size, only accessible via cheat, so this is not entirely representative of intended performance. Still, itquite the slideshow, and even SNES Doom has a more playable framerate. It does have Spectres though. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
