invictius Posted April 6, 2020 I could swear that AAA games look great at 4k, games when 1080p was the standard - ui a bit sharper but not really noticeable, anything else is like trying to shine a turd. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Edward850 Posted April 7, 2020 (edited) Play in whatever resolution you like, man. It seriously doesn't matter. Edited April 7, 2020 by Edward850 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

chungy Posted April 7, 2020 I think you might as well play at your native resolution if your hardware supports it. If that bothers you, then I guess you can lower it. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Graf Zahl Posted April 7, 2020 Screen resolution strictly obeys the law of diminishing returns. Going from ultra-low (320x200) to 640x480 is a visual revelation, going from there to HD is a marked improvement, but beyond that it becomes far more subtle while it also starts taxing the hardware a lot more without providing much in terms of quality improvements. And just like with old movies where the source material has its limits, the same applies to old games - the biggest gain you see with old lo-def games like Doom is less aliasing. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Phobus Posted April 7, 2020 Personally I think the main advantage of 4k is that it makes long views in mapsets like Avactor that little bit nicer, as you retain the fidelity for a greater distance that way. If you're playing with mouselook and no autoaim, you can manage some truly impressive sniping when everything is still clearly displayed a long way away. For most distances, 4k won't do much for you without mods, filters or other additional stuff. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I honestly don't think 4k provides any great benefit to video nor games, like Graf said. I find the resolution upgrade to be much more worthwhile (damn near necessary these days) for text-based work like programming. I'm never really bothered by having to play games at 1920x1080 if they're too taxing. The downgrade is barely perceptible. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Besides, issues such as aliasing aren't troublesome in games once AA is enabled, but it's damn fugly on text. It's probably my main issue with 1080 monitors nowadays. Still remember how text looked like on my previous 1280x1024 monitor, going for 1080p made a night and day revelation when it came to reading text in general, but aliasing is still there and the smaller the text (or, if it doesn't scale properly). Too bad that 4K is ludicrously expensive though... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Cruduxy Pegg Posted April 8, 2020 You can run at 1440p for best of both worlds. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
