Its an a free MS-DOS replacement, that mimics pretty much everything that makes MS-DOS, MS-DOS. Here FreeDOS is running the FreeDoom through VirtualBox on Linux: And here is the Original Doom running under FreeDOS using the OpenGEM graphical shell: 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

ZDoom supported 8 bit modes too and may be that's why it didn't work. Not using SDL is a plus. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

wesleyjohnson Posted January 6, 2021 Well ... I would it first be original binary on FreeDos. I have Doom collectors edition and Heretic, and can run them under FreeDos (before it got damaged). Then second, original binary under DosBox. But, Chocolate and Crispy are much more convienent. OpenGem under FreeDos running something?? I could never get that to do anything by trivial things. What kind of complex programs can it run now ? Looks like I get to upgrade FreeDos when I repair it. Thank you for the information. I got a box of old Win stuff that needs somewhere to run, and the XP many times cannot be convinced to run it properly. I actually have to use DoxBox on the XP to run it at all, and that even is a bit of a struggle. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
BoxY Posted January 6, 2021 As far as I know calling dosbox emulation of doom.exe identical to running it natively on DOS is a bit misleading, because of latency issues in the hardware emulation and other stuff that isn't present if you're running the game natively. In any case, choco is infinitely more convenient. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
