The series just shouldn't do something different with its environments for once? It doesn't need to be all tech bases and Hell. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Just "fine"? How was there no room for improvement in prior games? 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
rustygizzard Posted April 28, 2020 yeah because i'd love to play the same story over and over again. it honestly got old after 2016 retelling the same story we've heard with DOOM and DOOM 3. don't want to do the "tech base, hell" cycle for a FOURTH TIME to be honest. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Those are the settings and textures which shipped with the game, so it was always inevitable that the vast majority of custom WADs are going to be comprised of such locations, they're the easiest to create. The fact that there are also plenty of WADs which add radically different settings - ranging from realistic DN3D-style life-like locations, through various eldritch non-Hell dimensions, all the way to abstract WTF places like The Sky May Be, should amply demonstrate that there is an ongoing appetite for novel level themes among the Doom playerbase. Doom 3 has a strong aesthetic that works well (when you can see it), so I would be happy for it to return in future Doom games. However, I don't think that novelty should be held hostage by nostalgia. To me it would have been a wasted opportunity if id Software had created a brand-new triple-AAA Doom game with fancy graphics and new game mechanics, without also exploring new locations. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Deleted_Account Posted April 28, 2020 I'm glad they introduced some new environments after twenty seven years. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Certainly seems so; dunno what his bad habits were, but so far I see excessive bitching. "I refuse to read", and yet finds "several movies' worth of backstory" annoying (actually, I do too). So how do you want lore to be introduced, if you don't want to read and don't want to watch. Oh, I guess, you don't want it at all, because it takes away from the action? So you just want to have all action, no story? Maybe the Arcade mode? Or just play the most modern high-tech mod in Brutal Doom? I haven't played Eternal yet, but from what I read and what little footage I saw, it seems to take the next logical step: if Doom (2016) was a retelling of the Doom (1993) story, then Eternal is a retelling of DOOM II: Hell on Earth, which means environments such as actual cities, etc. Then it apparently expands it to additional planets through interdimensional travel? It's a bit like what they did in TNT and Plutonia, isn't it? 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Tetzlaff Posted May 2, 2020 I never noticed that Plutonia was supposed to take place on other planets. Why were the levels named Congo and Aztec then? Admittedly they neither looked African nor Mesoamerican, but I though the level designers just didn't care. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

You can find this in topics he participated to before Eternal's launch. 17 minutes ago, Tetzlaff said: I never noticed that Plutonia was supposed to take place on other planets. Well in the case of interdimensional travelling at least, I think that's a good point when looking at levels such as Wormhole where you do travel to an alternate version of the map. No idea what's up with the names either, there's no resemblance to these locations in the maps. Edited May 2, 2020 by seed 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
dr_st Posted May 2, 2020 I guess TNT is on Io and in Hell, and Plutonia is on Earth again (and in Hell), but yes, inter-dimensional travel is clearly mentioned as a thing. They just never got around to going anywhere before the demons took over. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

dr_st Posted May 3, 2020 What the hell does "burn one's bridges" in regards to a freaking video game even mean? That's supposed to not show you as an attention-seeking drama queen? 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

It would be better to burn the bridges from the UAC base so demons can't follow you, so you only need to deal with the Summoner attention-seeking drama queens. But you'd also lose access to the earlier areas to find all secrets, as DOOM 4 is so fond of doing... 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I kinda disliked this. I loved the earlier levels (Foundry, Argent Facility) where you can basically roam all areas in any order. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted May 22, 2020 I'm glad 2016 had a lot of Doom 3 elements in it because Doom 3 is an underrated title in general. I would say it's probably the "worst" of the main series of Doom games, but that doesn't mean it's bad because the whole series is damn good. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
