A well aimed SSG shot does it when he has the shield, shot just after his eyes flash so no need for 1-shot stagger for it :)

Unfortunately I fought against the Gladiator a few hours before your post and lost 2 lifes :-( and this is my only complaint about the game: Savegames don't exist. I can't replay a specific sequence from scratch because my health and ammo don't get reset after loading a checkpoint again. I'd have to replay the whole mission. In case of Sentinel Prime that's no big deal but most of the missions are quite lengthy.
