Any DOOM map builders that support .pk3 formatted maps?

SlayerOGames666

Question

I'm making a Full Game in DOOM's engine (GZDoom UDMF) with my pals called STEVE: Rise of Dr. X3Z (Working title, will be changed later) and we're using a .pk3 format for the IWAD. I hate SLADE 3's map maker, so could anyone give me other suggestions? Thanks!

Maps in a pk3 are still in a .wad format. If you open up any GZDoom pk3 mapset and have a look in the Maps folder, you'll see a bunch of .wad files. It's everything else (sounds, graphics, lumps etc.) that sit outside of the wads.

If you're editing in GZDoom / UDMF format, you probably want to use Ultimate Doom Builder. It's the map editor best suited to the format.

So how do i get to these maps by only using my .pk3 iwad, or is it sorta impossible?

You exact them from the pk3 using Slade or any standard zip program (7Zip, Winrar, even Windows if you like) and open them as you would any wad file. Include the pk3 as your resource to load in any custom assets.

To clarify, pk3s are not meant to be files you work in dynamically. They're a way of packaging everything up at the end for easy distribution.

While you're creating your mod, I would strongly recommend just putting everything into folders. UDB supports loading assets from folders, so you can easily create your map .wad files and load in new assets. Then when you're done, compile everything into a pk3 (which is really just a zip file) for distribution.
