Tracking Level Stats in the Old Days

Recommended Posts

As I've started to play Doom a little more and focus on 100% completion, at least by UV-max rules, I've definitely taken for granted modern ports' options to show you a tracker of the kills, items and secrets on the map. Sometimes when I go back to pure vanilla, it can be a little off-putting even.

My question is for the older and/or more vanilla-only focused players - what kind of methods do you use to keep track of everything, if at all? I figure monsters is pretty easy because they're normally obvious targets that make noise, but I feel secrets can just be a doozy sometimes. What I tend to do if I can't track it ingame is count how many I got, if I can remember, and then check the percentage at the end of the map and figure out how many are remaining based on that. It takes a little math but luckily most maps don't have 200 secerets. :P

That's how I remember it, yes. Save just before exiting, note the percentage, then go back and hit one more secret and get the percentage again. Of course for UV max you have to restart anyway, but the math should save time overall by reducing trial and error in later runs.

Very large vanilla maps (20-25 secrets) sometimes pushed me into printing out a screen capture of the automap and making notes around the edge. I'm sure there are easier methods nowadays when computers can actually run Doom and an OS simultaneously. :>
