Xymph Posted June 28, 2020 (edited) Speaking of Doom 64 ... well, originally, long ago :-) ... Xaser kindly shared his fork of DMMPST and together with my newly acquired IWAD ;) over the coming weeks I'll be working on adding statistics and other info to existing map articles, as well as generating skeletons and map views for The Lost Levels, and whatever else I may bump into. seed Posted June 28, 2020 (edited) 2 hours ago, Jon said: I’ve always felt the best response to the continued existence of fandom is to improve the Doom wiki. Channel the anger into constructive energy instead. After all the split was nearly ten years ago. Almost twice as much time has passed since then as before it. There’s still plenty to improve on the DOOM wiki. Agreed. Getting mad (and only mad) over Fandom will ultimately lead nowhere and be counterproductive in the long run, so the best course of action to improve the situation is to just point people to the real Doomwiki and contribute to it to permanently raise the amount of content, raise the awareness of users that Fandom is crap, and also raise the quality of the content on Doomwiki. Then, it's only a natural process until it dethrones Fandom. Hopefully. Edited June 28, 2020 by seed 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

Chip Posted June 28, 2020 I've tried to make a Wiki page for myself, then I thought about it, and these few problems came up -- I have no idea how to work that stuff. I'm bad at it I haven't contributed enough to the community I haven't contributed to the community I could write like a sentence, and my life story would be summed up. It probably wouldn't allow the topic to be made, since I have only been here for a few months. It's probably for the best, since I would have wasted time. Who would read it? Oh, wait, I think I just did exactly that. oops. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

If we just add enough granularity to things to cover even the most obscure of aspects, Fandom will become ever more redundant. I feel the SEO thing is something that could be addressed differently, but i am not sure how if @Quasar got in touch with someone at Google, and i guess doing so would specificially highlight the dislike. That's the only real thing that actively hurts the Wiki on a daily basis. 2 minutes ago, LiT_gam3r said: I've tried to make a Wiki page for myself, then I thought about it, and these few problems came up -- I have no idea how to work that stuff. Oh, wait, I think I just did exactly that. oops. Wiki entries are usually academic grade. As in, they need to be written in a neutral point of view. Two examples: ''GZDoom is a source port derived from ZDoom, created by Graf Zahl in 2005. Its first release was 0.91, released on June 27, 2005.'' ''GZDoom is an awesome port that can play many mods and people seem to like it a lot, so it must be really popular. Graf Zahl made it fifteen years ago, its great!'' Commentary: The first sentence is a neutral description of the port GZDoom. It describes from what it was derived of, who made it, when it was first released. In a nutshell, this is the right way to write an article, because it is devoid of personal opinion. The Doom Wiki attempts to be an encyclopedia; Encyclopedia's try to avoid any personal subjectivity in every entry that is made. The second sentence is a subjective description of the port GZDoom. It describes personal opinion and conjecture and gives limited background to its history. This is the wrong way to write an article, because it is full of personal opinion. Someone else may not find it an awesome port, and popularity is not a strong argument to include as a reason why an entry should be made. This kind of entry would be fine for a personal blog piece, but not for a wiki. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Chip Posted June 28, 2020 @Redneckerz I was just kidding. I mean, I did actually try, but I couldn't write a word. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Chip Posted July 17, 2020 I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but looking at the DOOM Wiki, there are no articles on DOOM 64's lost levels. I don't know how to work with the editing, so maybe somebody that does know could write in a walkthrough. There are also no level descriptions for DOOM VFR (which I don't think really matters, but still). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

If you are genuinely interested in contributing to the wiki, see doomwiki.org/wiki/Doom_Wiki:FAQ And meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing These topics you mentioned are obscure. As for Doom 64, we don't have a tool to capture the automap screens of Lost Levels yet. Edited July 17, 2020 by TheNoob_Gamer 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Xymph Posted July 17, 2020 (edited) As noted, those articles, map images etc. are in the works and will be added via XymphBot after I wrap up my current Compet-n project. Patience, grasshopper. :) 7 hours ago, TheNoob_Gamer said: As for Doom 64, we don't have a tool to capture the automap screens of Lost Levels yet. Slade can produce D64 map views, I generated the whole set already, just not uploaded yet because of the above. Edited July 17, 2020 by Xymph 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Xymph Posted July 19, 2020 (edited) Statistics, modern map views, navigation boxes, and few other bits for the original 33 maps added over the weekend. I'll probably get around to the Lost Levels tomorrow. Edited July 19, 2020 by Xymph 7 Quote Share this post Link to post
Xymph Posted July 20, 2020 And... the map articles for The Lost Levels are now present, with map views, stats, and other basics. I can hear LiT_gam3r's sigh of relief. ;-) Walkthroughs and secret descriptions are up to other contributors; I may still fill in little bits and pieces as I play through the rest of the whole game (currently at MAP06). 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Jon Posted July 20, 2020 Nice work! Somewhere, we need to document how to actually access the Lost levels. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
