Pistol start/Quicksaves/Permadeath? How do you play?

Recommended Posts

UV or UV Fast or sometimes even NM when i really feel like i want a fun challenge

with occasional saves or sometimes when i'm feeling like it only the autosave at the start of the map

usually continuous and sometimes pistol start

I like to sometimes even go for 100% getting all the secrets and killing all monsters

I often like to play with vertical mouse movement on because I like to look arround freely but i can play with out it well too

I usually use either prboom+ or gzdoom

I love multiplayer too, so ill play servers on ZDaemon, Zandronum, and Odamex sometimes too

years ago i would try to beat wads in one go permadeath style with no saving and restarting back to map01 when i died but i think i sorta grew bored of permadeath  in video games all together over the years because i think the restarting from the beginning of the game when i died got boring after a while and permadeath to me became a uninteresting way to add difficulty when there many other funner ways to make wads harder and i just wanted to play as many wads as possible and have fun

sometimes ill play with mods and monster randomizer mods like colorful hell or aeons of death to mix it up

UV continuous with savescumming for fanmade WADs.

UV pistol start with map reset upon death for the official IWADs.

Depends on the WAD. For easier ones like Doom or Doom2 I just play the whole thing straight. For something like Hell Revealed 2, I save only at the beginning of each level (saves during a level feels like cheating because monsters will forget their target)

There are three main ways I play pwads: UV Pistol Start, UV Continuous, HMP Pistol Start. Which one i choose depends on the pwad. The factors are difficulty, balance and the way the author says the wad is meant to be played, if he/she says anything at all. I use saves in all three of them.

No items, Fox only, Final Destination.

Oh, wait, for Doom! Oh.

UV Pistol start from E1M1/MAP01 (or whatever map it replaces), if there's more levels I continue normally from there.

On PC I play on UV always and I only save at the start of a new level as that's what I'm used to from when I first played Doom on PlayStation. I never save during a map.

I play it so it stays a classic in my gaming library.  Yes.. some people play it to kill demons in a game, I'm different I suppose.  I play it to hear the best video game music in history.

Just like in resident evil when you kill zombies... I only play it for the music especially RE1 1996 longbox psx version with the original soundtrack.

Continuous with saves. As I'm playing UV -fast only, having to replay the entire level just because I can get jumped and shredded immediately by a corner camping Heavy Weapon Dude would get boring/annoying really quick. There is also no point in replaying a part you already beat and having to beat it over and over and over just to have one more go at the problematic part is what I would call a time waste. Then there are inescapeable death pits, traps etc., it's just not worth it. No saving also prevents exploration and secret hunting in radiation etc.

Playing without saves would be extremely harmful to my enjoyment of Doom (or almost any game for that matter). That is to say, I don't exploit it. I don't reload after every misplay or hit. If I barely survive a fight with 5 HP, I just save to a different slot and see if I can make it through like that. If I see there is not enough healing and some part that is unbeatable with 5 HP, I go back to the save before that and do the fight better.

Fully agree with your sentiments. For you it's with UV -fast, for someone like me it may be just on regular UV, but the point is - if I'm playing at the peak challenge that I can do (given my current skill level), then striving for no-save gameplay means that I have to spend a lot of time learning the levels and perfecting the run. And it's more time than I want to spend on a game, any game, since there are so many more games that I could play (or generally fun stuff to do) in that time.
