Samuel tells you this at the end of map02, but is there any truth to it? From the video call, you can tell he's inside his office in the ARC. Later on in map07, it is revealed that the ARC is 80 kilometers away by tram. Assuming the Foundry reactor had a meltdown, there is no way the radius of the explosion would be anywhere near 80km. So then, is Sam just saying that to motivate Doomguy to save the reactor?

I just think Samuel Hayden's a dick, and he pretends like everything revolves around him. thank god he's a robotic, because that guy deserves to have no feelings.

But seriously, I just think that that was an error. and if not, then I think that since the game is in the future (I think) or at least a different reality which is way more technologically advanced than ours, then the reactor would have like a super nuclear explosion which could take out like a whole country. maybe they have bombs that they could just throw into hell and all of it would die (then respawn, cuz' it's hell). I don't know, just a theory, but good observation. I had never noticed that before.

Doomguy doesn't have much reason to care about Hayden's survival at that point.

 

It's more a question of trying to get the Doomguy to trust Hayden's directions for stopping the meltdown. Doomguy's right there, so he wouldn't survive if it blew up, and Hayden is far away but claiming he'd be affected too, so he needs Doomguy to avert this and the instructions he's giving will do what he's claiming they'll do.

 

One could also argue that, from a certain point of view, if Doomguy doesn't survive there, Hayden will not survive the demon invasion either. He needs Doomguy to retrieve the Demon Crucible for him, and as long as that point isn't reached he doesn't feel like he can take the demons on his own. That was the entire point of bringing the sarcophagus from Hell in the first place, and waking up Doomguy once Pierce did her thing.

The Doomguy is just pissed because Hayden pronounces "neither" as /ˈniːð.ə(ɹ)/ and not the proper aristocratic /ˈnaɪð.ə(ɹ)/. If you wondered why he throws a tantrum in Argent Facility and starts destroying the filters instead of disabling them, that's why.
