vanilla_d00m Posted June 19, 2020 (edited) Is the volume of the SSG suppose to be this loud in DOOM?? I havn't used the SSG in a long time since I only play DOOM II to fight the last boss untill yesterday I finally beat DOOM II from beginning to end but with trillions of load/saves. It was soo hard for me I had to use the mouse, I wanted to use keyboard only but it was impossible (n00b!) I noticed the SSG is much lower on chocolate doom, DOSbox has the SSG as loud as in zdoom too, which one is the correct one?? It's soo loud it drowns out the other stuff going on in the game.. Chocolate doom sound fx level 8 DOSbox sound fx level 8 SSG on DOSBOX loud.. Edited June 19, 2020 by vanilla_d00m 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
maxmanium Posted June 19, 2020 Man, you must have a weird computer... there shouldn't be any difference. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
vanilla_d00m Posted June 19, 2020 (edited) Crispy doom had the lowest audio of them all, I mean I can barely hear any of the gameplay unless I put the in-game volume slider to 15. Tested on 5.0 Edited June 19, 2020 by vanilla_d00m 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted June 19, 2020 They all use the soundfile present in the wad, which is always the same volume. It all depends how loud you have your speakers/sound device.. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
vanilla_d00m Posted June 19, 2020 (edited) I really had them all on the same level. Zdoom just has the ssg too loud on the game (volume 8.0 sound fx.. any lower it won't sound right to me:( ) but I can always use the psx or n64 sounds I guess. I mean I use to like those versions... but over-time It felt like it lacked something. Something original sounding. I actually preferred the console version of psx doom over the pc before. UndeadRyker Posted June 20, 2020 A possibility for you is the well-known bug that happens in Windows in Chocolate Doom related source ports (that includes Crispy Doom as well). If you have your MIDI device set to Window's Native MIDI, the music slider will essentially lower or raise game volume and the music itself depending on the slider's position. You can see the effect happen in your volume mixer. This makes it behave somewhat like a master volume slider. So if you have your music volume set as halfway, then it will lower the music including the game sounds by halfway. To temporarily fix that, I set my MIDI device to be OPL, and I opened the volume mixer and I set my source port back to its full volume. Another explanation is the sound engine (not sure exactly what it's called). Since you mention ZDoom, it used to have FMOD. Other people have mentioned that FMOD artificially boosts sounds to make it seem louder and crisper. Especially after the GZDoom update that dropped FMOD, a lot of people reported that the sounds sound quieter and weaker. Chocolate Doom and the latest version of GZDoom use an alternative sound engine which plays sound at their actual, true way. So there is a definite possibility that it isn't just your ears or computer. :) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
vanilla_d00m Posted June 21, 2020 In ZDOOM 2.6.1 it just drowns everything.. like it was juiced up by 100 channels. Crispy or Chocolate does it ok and can play DOOM 2 again with the volume loud. I had ZDOOM on couple hours ago and the ssg was soo loud it was all you heard during the levels in DOOM 2. DOOM 2 to me isn't as good as DOOM 1.. I like it for the ssg though and message to the arch vile is the best track. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
