Redneckerz Posted June 30, 2020 (edited) .... aka ''Things Ling did in recent times that are quite useful''. Over the past few years @Linguica stood at the discovery of the Linguortal and, with @Nine Inch Heels of the Mikoveyor. But along the way in recent years, Ling posted various interesting bits in various threads. This thread is a compilation of those things, for easier access and to provide an index of all the useful stuff Ling has worked on in recent years, disregarding engine builds. Originally i planned to submit these of /idgames but after a talk with Linguica, i decided upon this alternative. An index is provided behind a spoiler that links to the relevant post. As you can tell, there are quite a few. :P Most of what you find below targets Vanilla Doom. Some of these, such as the DeHackEd patches from ''Stupid DeHackEd Tricks'' are best played in DOSBox or Chocolate Doom: They are likely to crash the program because they mess around with the memory pointers in the Doom executable. Do not try these on a geniune DOS system unless you are prepared to go through a possible hard reboot. You have been warned. Index: Spoiler The Linguica Archive carries a few sections:ColorMap Contraptions: An expansive selection of colormaps Linguica made for use in Vanilla, aswell as two TINTTABS for Heretic/Hexen. Bring some color to your Doom, and perhaps attempt to achieve Vanilla colored lighting. The COLORMAP Contraptions will bring color to your Doom. Selected posts: Square, Sine, Tangent Saturate Saturate50 Hue Circus Gamma Colormap, falls off Hexen/Heretic TINTTABS (Hexen/Heretic only. These apply correct transluency and gamma levels) DeHackEd Douchebaggery: Ling's archive of crazy DeHackEd tricks as found in the aforementioned ''Stupid DeHackEd Tricks'' thread, and a few more for posterity. They form a nice creative treasure chest to see what can also be achieved in the oldest hack editor Doom has had. Selected posts: Static cannon (Chocolate Doom/PrBoom Plus) (an overflow hack) Teleport.deh: (Enemies teleport instantly right next to you. MAY HARDLOCK DOSBOX OR SYSTEM. NON-MEMORY SAFE.) Comehere.deh: (Enemies teleport straight into to you, and as its a modifed archvile, get killed as a result, resulting in a anime style flight and gliding over the floor effect. MAY HARDLOCK DOSBOX OR SYSTEM. NON-MEMORY SAFE.) Boomerang.deh: (An archvile flame on top of a revenant missile makes it act like a boomerang) Flames.deh: (A flame field in a plus formation which hurts you if you get too close) Spwnspot.deh: (A spawn cube has a set spawn target. But what if the spawn target followed you? You get homing spawn cubes) Ohmygod.deh: (A spawn cube that also sends a ton of fire balls in multiple spots, essentially creating some sort of firework effect.) NPC.deh: (''I accidentally realized that putting the SpawnFly code pointer in an enemy's attack state will forcibly set the reactiontime to -1, and so the monster will never attack you again, unless attacked first, which resets reactiontime to 0 and lets a single attack happen in return. You can also set the monster's reaction time in Dehacked to -1 so that it will never attack first. This effectively makes a "NPC" which walks around, doesn't attack you, and will do a tit-for-tat retaliation if hit, but not with the cheesy edited pain state like I've seen.'') IDK.deh: (A Icon of Sin whose spawn cubes are plasma burts in a set pattern, leading to a Touhou bullet-hell like effect.) Archhelp.deh: (''Give the archvile flame a negative speed, let it wake up and walk several steps with 0-length frames, then you have a spot somewhere pseudorandomly in front of the player to screw around with. One could use this concept to make, say, damaging area denial spots pop up in front of the player randomly.''. In this case, after an archvile is finished with his attack, it summons a Cyberdemon which briefly ''pops'' in, shoots, and then disappears instantly.) Summoner.deh: (''Why not turn the archvile into a bona fide summoner? (I used the revenant fireball for the spawn pointer but I think any projectile type would work?)'' Linguortal Leftovers: Vanilla portals in Doom? Well yeah, and Ling made quite a lot of demonstrations for it! This section highlights all the various linguortals that were demonstrated, including 4 linguortals in one WAD. Selected posts: Show.wad: (''Hide'' monsters in mid segs, fake disappearing doors, needs Eternity) Change.wad: (''Hide'' monsters in mid segs, non-ZDoom ports) Portal2.wad: (Semi-portal, Vanilla only) Portal3.wad: (Original Vanilla Doom Portal/Linguortal, Vanilla/Choco only) Portal4.wad: (Changing geometry, mid texture walls, and swapping fronts, allows instantly changing architecture through a line, PrBoom et al) Portal5.wad: (A Linguortal closing door, Choco only) Gen01.wad: (4 Linguortals in one map. Vanilla/Choco only) Mikoveyor Mania: The combined big brains of Ling and NineInchHeels brought forward various example WADS expanding upon the Mikoveyor design, resulting in a non-definitive prefab that one could use in his, her or their WAD. A good example of pseudo-Vanilla scripting is on display here. An earlier version of the prefab is rather phallic in nature. You will see what i mean when you open it in an editor. Also includes an example of a player accelerator using a mikoveyor and a door opening effect through getting hurt by the mikoveyor. Selected posts: Linguica's voodoo conveyor belt (Using mikoportals) NineInchHeel's Miko_02 and Miko_03 variants First experiments with a universal Mikoveyor One minute level with Mikoveyor tech Fart_wad: (Open a door through a Mikoveyor by getting hurt) The Mikoveyor is a template for a voodoo conveyor belt (Early prefab) Mikoveyor All-in-One, Phallic accelerator Serious_shit.wad: An accelerator Mikoveyor: Preloader, first edition Mikoveyor, Optimized prefab (Preloader second edition) Vanilla Conveyor, fixed (Based on Jon's Vanilla conveyor written in WadC) Varia Vanilla: A bunch of apparel works that do not fit the above categories, but are nevertheless useful. Examples include the infamous Cornell Box, a lighting experiment that showcased Doom lighting in ways not seen before, or semi-randomly spawning monsters. Or how about a silent sound effect, useful for silent triggers? That is here. Selected posts: The Longest WAD (Googol.wad) The Cornell Box, or megatextures and dramatic lighting in Vanilla Linguica's wtf.wad: ''demonstrates an enemy seeing you and attempting to shoot through a self-referencing sector:'' Linguica's 106.000 troopers in one map (106k.zip) Linguica's random elastic collisions (Launch.wad) More elastic collisions (Elastic.wad) Linguica's Randomish monster spawning in vanilla (Rndspwn.wad) Linguica's Silent sound effect (Silence.wad) (Ideal for silent triggers?) Linguica's Impossible monsters (nomoonly.zip) Linguica's Donut.wad: ''One subsector. 8 segs. 0 nodes.''. Bonus: Links to a few related threads that have their works either on /idgames or are hosted externally. These are not part of the archive. Spoiler Linguica's Antrywey (A level in a save file.) Linguica's Doom Movement Bible (''Here I sort out once and for all all the quirks and vagaries of the Doom movement code, including all the weird tricks and how they operate.'') Jon's Arena: An easy to use map to make Mikoveyor's easier in WadC Jon's Brutal Extinction Tournament (Brexit) (A map using the Mikoveyor/Vanilla conveyor trick in a level.) Credits: Linguica for the major grunt of the work on these experiments and linguortals Nine Inch Heels for the work done on the Mikoveyor (Also known as Vanilla Conveyor) Jon for Brutal Extinction Tournament and the Arena map Mikolah for discovering the Mikoportal, whose principles form the basis for the Mikoveyor Everyone else that got inspired by these experimental tricks Conclusion: I hope anyone will be inspired by the efforts of Linguica and compatriots and challenge themselves to think differently about Vanilla. In a world of source ports, challenging yourself to a hard limit is often as rewarding as making your first DECORATE monster. The Linguica Archive gives a good compendium of what can be achieved by merely staying within the original limits, in various sectors of the engine.Download: Linguica Archive.zip Edited June 30, 2020 by Redneckerz Movement bible added 38 Quote Share this post Link to post
Nine Inch Heels Posted June 30, 2020 That's quite an impressive compilation you pieced together there. Even if not entirely within the spirit of the thread, it may perhaps still be worth adding the movement bible to the bonus section, since it is partially related to the maps based on elastic collisions, for example. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

Its probably not everything, i just covered everything ending with .wad, .zip or had an URL as link (Linguica's a fan of that i can tell) Regarding the Movement Bible: Good thinking, added. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Woolie Wool Posted June 30, 2020 Hard reboots aren't really a problem for DOS because there is no disk caching. If it crashes, w/e. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

SiFi270 Posted July 1, 2020 It might be. Let's have the real expert weigh in. On 9/19/2018 at 9:31 PM, Linguica said: 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

SiFi270 Posted July 1, 2020 Beaten to it. For future reference, there's a curved arrow in the top right of quote boxes that'll take you straight to the original post. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Thanks! 25 minutes ago, SiFi270 said: Beaten to it. For future reference, there's a curved arrow in the top right of quote boxes that'll take you straight to the original post. I looked at the url and couldn't see a thread name (Just links to applications) so i thought it linked to the user profile page. Thanks for mentioning! 23 minutes ago, TheNoob_Gamer said: Of course it is. My good pal TDRR! It didn't register to me since its not by the official author, but yes, that brings part of the BD experience to Vanilla. A few patches are lost however, but BD Dehacked and VBrutal Doom are still there :) Some excellent responses, thank you for helping out :) Edited July 1, 2020 by Redneckerz 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

TheMagicMushroomMan Posted August 8, 2021 Really useful page to use as a reference, Redneckerz. I thought it said "The Linguica Archvile" when I clicked the thread though, so I'm somewhat disappointed. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

With that said, it makes the following confusing: 8 hours ago, Nikku4211 said: and the .wad included in the .ZIP archive is actually just the HTML 404 page. Are you saying that colormaps.wad in my zip file is the 404 page? Because when i click on the link, it leads to a 404 page. Not that it has anything to do with my zip. 8 hours ago, TheMagicMushroomMan said: Really useful page to use as a reference, Redneckerz. Given Ling's experiments with Archie, it would have been fitting. Oh well. Better be mediocre all the time than a legend once. :P 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I've been in similar situations. Sometimes it's because I'm trying to save the link's target as a file when it's an HTML 404 page, or sometimes the browser I use for whatever reason automatically tries to save the link's target as a file when it's an HTML 404 page. Usually something like that. After all, the post is from many years ago... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Pinging @Linguica, is this an hidden experiment? Nope. I can only imagine I deleted it from my web space for some reason I can't fathom. The hex edit is clearly a plain old 404 link. From looking at the link I literally pasted in the simple Python code I used to generate the colormap so I don't think it's a huge loss. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
