Supercharge or Soulsphere?

Just because title screen says "Doom" when you start game doesn't mean it's called Doom, it just means you are Doomed. If it was, it would say "You are playing Doom".

When you pick up a Megasphere, does it say "You picked up a Megasphere", or does it say "SuperMegaCharge!!!"?

When you pick up a box of shotgun shells, does it say "You picked up shotgun shells", or "Buckshot Ballet!"?

The inconsistency with the pick up text is not my problem. It's just not evidence.

I think manuals were written not by the same guys who were working on Doom. Developers added Supercharge, people calls it Soul Sphere.

And yet in the IWAD, the graphics are named SOUL[A-D]0...

It's soul sphere in the manual (like Dark Pulse showed) and it's always been soulsphere in various editors.

Yet the manual calls invisibility a blur artifact. I've always called that one invisibility and in game when you pick it up, it says 'partial invisibility'. No wonder there's confusion.

When I was child, soulsphere for me was "weird looking, whispering blue face ball/thing". Soulsphere sounds more like real thing and supercharge for me feels like effect that sphere gives to player - it charges/boosts your health, for example you got 20% health and by taking it you get 120% health, that's how supercharging works.

NEXT HOT DEBATE: Is it Computer Map or Computer Area Map?!?!

Also the argument that the manual should be weighted over the game itself is a bizarre one. Not that I care, but still. For instance, the proper name for weapon 6 is Plasma Gun, since it literally is not a rifle. The manual was probably written by some hobo they picked up off the street, it means nothing to me compared to the ultimate grail of Doom knowledge: DOOM.

EDIT: Just realised Doom Builder calls Spiritual Armor and Health Potions “Armor Bonus” and “Health Bonus”. It’s fine when the game does it, but when CodeImp does it? Heresy!!

EDIT 2: More fuel for the fire: When you pick up these bonuses, it says "You picked up an armor bonus." So there's at least two examples of the game explicitly calling the object you pick up something other than the name given in the manual.. I'm still a Soulsphere man (me me, I'm a Soulsphere man!) but the IRON CLAD CASE against Team Supercharge is cracking and crumbling more and more..!

I always thought of them as Supercharges in the 1990s and early 2000s, but after that I have increasingly thought of them as Soulspheres, mainly because that's how they are named in the Doom Builder line of level editors.

Doomkid, man, I like you and all, I promised to leave you alive as one of the cool people, but damn did reading this post make my trigger finger get a sudden bunch of spasming cramps with that Plasma RIFLE argument. And we settled this in the past!

As for what Codeimp calls them, who cares? He ain't got any naming power over the game conventions. He could call them "Bottles of Gatorade Blue Frost" and "Jujube, the Eye-Glower Helmet Demon" for all I care. Everyone else just better get it right when it comes to what the official names are.

And then hope they're on the right side of the argument, or I will make my Pewpew Gun throw all sorts of Blue Hurty Balls.

EDIT: Even YOU don't call it a Plasma Gun, by your own admission! What do you have to say for yourself now, Peaches en Hellgalia?!

For curiosity's sake, @Dark Pulse how does SLADE refer to the Invisibility graphics?

Too lazy to open it myself.

@seed The in-game graphic is called PINS[A-D]0, which clearly comes from partial invisibility...

The manual is just full of non-sense, really, except for maybe "soulsphere". I still call it a supercharge, though. Old habits die hard. I also call the rocket launcher a bazooka in my native language.

How is it the plasma rifle? Its shape resembles that of a canon more than that of rifle.

Doom is a sci-fi shooter.

I just realised I have no idea whether I call it a Plasma Gun or Rifle, normally. No idea at all. Probably "gun" as it's easier to say. I probably use the two interchangeably. Mainly since I don't really think about what it is other than a noisy thing that spits rapid blue fireballs.

I didn't have the printed manuals, but I used to pore over the textfiles back in the day and have known it as a soulsphere since 1994.

That said, I call the "blur artefact" partial invisibility.

So.
