Cacodemon345 Posted July 5, 2020 I keep wondering from where the "Can it run Doom?" trend originated. Was the trend started immediately following Doom's release, or did it start with the crappy 32x release, or did it start when Doom's source code was released? 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gokuma Posted July 5, 2020 Probably from running on a Kodak camera. I think that was the first weird device. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Jayextee Posted July 5, 2020 I wouldn't say it was a trend as much as a common benchmark; it's said that the very process of getting DOOM to run on a device will determine in part its usability for hacking it to perform other tasks. I can see how in a way, it's a bespoke app with a very specific purpose and outcome that can be; to a degree; tested by eye. Of course it is just good goofy fun when someone sees their coffee machine has an LCD screen and thinks "I wonder if DOOM can run on this?". It'd play like shit, of course, but I suppose actually playing the thing isn't high on the priority list of such ports... 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
cu2 Posted July 5, 2020 I think it just came to be because of the meriads of ports this game received. Every console back then was able to run this little thing, well except the amiga if you count it as a game machine (which actually got its port recently by some knowledgeable amiga nerds :P) The release of the source code was also a big think because it essentially means that you can port it to anything with a processor on it 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

cu2 Posted July 5, 2020 I haven't, but I have watched lgr's review on it heh. It doesn't feel complete without the beeper sounds, though :P 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doom-X-Machina Posted July 5, 2020 (edited) I think it stems from the fact the source code of Doom is so simple and adaptable. Carmack has said in the past that after Wolfenstein mods started popping up, he aimed at having a code that was easy to mod, hack, etc. I think this is the essence of Doom's charm. It's so simple and yet so sophisticated (at least for it's time). Edited July 5, 2020 by Doom-X-Machina 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
fraggle Posted July 5, 2020 Not from any one thing. People just noticed the trend that Doom was ported to so many things because: (1) it's open source; (2) the source code is clean and easily portable; (3) hardware has advanced to the level where even the most basic device nowadays has the CPU power to be able to run it. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

They shined best on Amiga's with PowerPC upgrades, so they could keep up with PC versions quite well. For classic Amiga's, ZDoom 1.22 is probably the most advanced along with Boom. (In fact, its also the most advanced port for PPC but its not a native app.) 2 hours ago, Lokatzis 007 CJ said: I think it just came to be because of the meriads of ports this game received.
