How fast is a turbo pinky?

Recommended Posts

The nerdy answer:

Demons have a step size of 10. When they walk around, they make a step every 2 tics. So the regular pinky speed is 10 units per 2 tics, or 5 units per tics if you want. With 35 tics per second, that gives a speed of 175 units per second.

Turbo pinkies move exactly twice as fast as regular pinkies, because they make a step every tic instead of every other tic. So they move at 350 units per second.

Now if we believe what's written here: https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Map_unit we have 64 units = 1.5 meters. Okay. 42⅔ units per meter, why not. Let's go with it. 350 units per second × 60 seconds = 21 000 units per minute. ×60 = 1 260 000 units per hour. ÷ (1000×42⅔) = 29.5 km/h.

To give a frame of reference, to qualify for the Boston Marathon, young men should be able to endurance run at over 13 km/h (exact value depends on age bracket) while the human sprint speed record (Usain Bolt, 2009) was a bit over 44 km/h, while the average healthy guy can be expected to sprint at about 32 km/h.

This means that if you get chased by a turbo pinky, you may live if you can sprint to a secure area quickly, but if you can't find a refuge (or a super shotgun) quickly it'll wear you down quickly.

Fortunately, this is not a problem for Doomguy because he is tireless and runs even faster than a rocket in flight.
