How do you play DooM? Keyboard only vs Keyboard + mouse vs controller

Well oddly, I once could play DOOM all in Keyboard. Weirdly enough, the XP collection for DOOM didn't allow mouse support which confused me, because I remember Doom 95 allowing mouse AND joystick support, so not being able to when playing the XP edition was weird. I've played it on joystick before too, actually. Never on a controller. But I do prefer to have a mouse, it's just easier to shoot.

Depends on what I'm playing exactly. Right now I'm playing the Doom 64 port on PS4, second run now, and the DS4 is pretty adequate, has it's limitations, but two analog sticks allow for better maneuvering than keyboard only.

 

On PC, I will generally want to play any FPS using a mouse, and then my weird half gamepad doodad. I've played FPS on both PC and consoles for many years, and something I concluded is that KB+M gives you smoothness and speed in looking and aiming, but lacks some fine movement and certainly comfort, and while gamepad gives you smooth analog movement, it obviously lacks the speed and precision of a mouse, combine with the fact that I've grown less comfortable with WASD over the years (I can still do it, but it strains me with extended play).

PrBoom+ doesn't support the thing, as far as I can tell, so I pretty much only use it for GzDoom.

 

Anyone else here tried to play Doom, or other FPS, combining mouselook with an analog stick? I think it's a concept that has very strong merit.

I'm pretty surprised not a lot of people play with controller. I wasn't imagining 100 people using it, but much more than 6.

Because DOOM is for the most part played on PC, which means controllers have no rights to exist in this very fandom are mostly at the console bay (as in your case).

You can still hook up a controller to your PC and play DOOM, right? If not, then I understand why only 6 people voted controller.

That's right, but most people (especially those voting here) prefer to use devices readily available with PCs.

I like to play Doom in any setup i can...  Sometimes i play with touchscreen on the phone, sometimes on a PC with a keyboard and mouse, other with only keyboard on a very old DOS laptop and last but not least i play using a GB boy pi case

I have to commend you for that, I've tried playing Doom on a smartphone before, and I just can't do it, touch controls just aren't viable for me.

I don't like mouselook for Doom or Wolfenstein. Any other FPS, absolutely, but not those two.

Normally keyboard + mouse (WASD to move, E to open, mouse to aim and fire), but when my mouse doesnt have more battery, i have to use <- and -> to aim and up arrow to shoot. For me is more confortable that the default keyboard-only setup

Keyboard + Mouse, I can't imagine playing an FPS game any other way lol. WASD for movement, E for use, SHIFT for run and LMB for firing.

His being a keyboard-only player wasn't what earned him the ire of forumgoers. Nobody here is gonna make fun of another's choice of controls; this thread is proof of that.

 

IIRC, that dude was real obnoxious about going into difficulty-related threads and vehemently voicing his complaints about Nightmare. When encouraged to use M+KB, he got defensive and saying he couldn't get used to the controls. Now to his credit, he supposedly did beat Nightmare keyboard-only and had Youtube video proof. That was when he became pretty insufferable and challenging people to duel him keyboard-to-keyboard. He didn't say it explicitly, but I got the vibe that he thought himself a better Doom player than those peasant mouse fingerbangers because of his beating Nightmare keyboard-only.

Even I can't play M+KB lol. I tried once few months ago, but failed always, so, made a final decision to use KB only.

Imagine being this much of a tryhard. I'll sooner single segment UV the hardest wads before I resorted to keyboarding with fast, respawning monsters. Way to speedrun carpal tunnel!

For normal play, keyboard and mouse.

If I were to play PSX Doom or Doom 64 on their original respective systems, I'd obviously be using a controller, though I have more fun when I'm able to play them on PC.

I have, however, played Doom 1 Episode 1 using keyboard only on UV with no auto-run, but that was primarily to get a sense of things for a personal project in addition to acting as a self-imposed challenge. I certainly don't prefer it, but I do find it odd that such a challenge is so vehemently looked down upon, considering the multitudes of other challenge types out there.

Mouse + Keyboard, with high sens.

I tried Keyboard only sometimes, my wrist was hurting a couple of hours after every experience. The same with mouse and low sens. It gives you more precision but you have to move your arm to move the mouse and I can't get used to play this way.

my hand and fingers gets nice amount of exercise by playing KB-only. Earlier, After playing like an hour, they used to pain a bit, but when I do warm-up of hands and fingers before playing, they don't pain now.

Even when I was young and not terribly concerned, that would seem like a most abysmally foolish practice, about as bad to most people as me playing with rumble enabled for basically any period of time.
