BluePineapple72 Posted July 20, 2020 (edited) ~~~~~~~~~~~~ About Damn Time! ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Greetings and Salutations folks! I bet you forgot about this project. I know I did! Line in the Sand was my first attempt at a community project, so I learned a whole lot while running it. While it was on hiatus for a great deal of time, I learned what it really means to run one of these projects, namely with deadline expectations and rule setting. While the 3 maps (soon to be four) are short of the nine that I had expected back in July, I'm still rather proud of what this project became. The maps fit the theme incredibly well and play even better, so I'm very excited to give it to you now! WAD File: Line in the Sand.wad (Beta version 1) Port: Limit Removing IWAD: Doom II Resources: PATCHTEX - compiled in WAD Comments: Mapset created as part of the Line in the Sand community project. Each map was made by two mappers, with each half of the map having been mapped exclusively by a single mapper. Neither mapper can cross the 'line in the sand' so to speak. MAPLIST: Version 1 of the WAD contains the three finished maps for the project. Version 2 will contain custom menu graphics and midis to make this wad unique. Likewise, any maps finished for the project will be included. @DynamiteKaitorn has an entire half finished but no map to connect it to. I'll be providing that half KNOWN ISSUE: Custom skies don't show up in PRBoom yet. Sky transfers need to be added. This project was moved onto my discord server The Pineapple Under the Sea sometime in September. The server has been host to multiple community projects, including Hellevator and the monthly Pineapple Under the Sea Speedmapping series, or PUSS for short. We're a community of mappers who like to map! If you're a mapper (or a playtester) consider joining, as we're always making new stuff for Doom! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Until Next Time Folks ,o7 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OP: Spoiler A MAPPING CHALLENGE, FOR TWO! IT BEGINS! PREFAB FILE: Line in the Sand Prefab v2.zip IMPORTANT UPDATE DEADLINE DELAY and MAPPER EXTENSION Hello! It's been decided that the deadline for this event is going to be December 20th now. I've also decided to take on new members! If you would like to participate, let me know and I'll be sure to put in you into a second batch drawing. As always, be sure to join my discord to keep as up to date with this project if interested: https://discord.gg/8vbNME9 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT RESOURCE PACK: It isn't a texture pack but a patch wad. When used as a game resource in a builder, the patch will rearrange the existing vanilla textures to create new ones using the patch included in the wad file, hence why there are no actual textures within the actual wad file. Included within this file is the PATCHTEX resource file. It is a set of modified/expanded vanilla textures. I'm confident great work will be made with this! The line has been modified to have expanded sectors. You can modify these sectors to however you see fit, as long as you don't go beyond their original size. Once you have your three sectors modified, your team can begin mapping. As for the line. If you decide to have your maps connect with an open space, you still need to have some sort of blocker where the line is, like a wall, to keep up with the theme. If you're not planning on doing this, then you aren't allowed to connect to use the line for any walls; you have to build away form it, as seen in the example screenshot. I hope you all have fun with this project, and I hope that some great and crazy maps come out of this! You have until the end of October to finish and submit these maps. Map away! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THE TIME HAS COME!!! Team Draft: Spoiler HERE BE THE TEAMS TEAM 1: @TheNoob_Gamer @TheV1perK1ller TEAM 2: @Steve88 @xxWeNxx TEAM 3: @DynamiteKaitorn @LateNightPerson TEAM 4: TEAM EE @E.M. @el_inf TEAM 5: @ViolentBeetle @Pegleg TEAM 6: @BluePineapple72 @Morpheus666 TEAM 7: @4MaTC @Surreily TEAM 8: GIRAFFE GANG @DukeOfDoom @fveitsi_ TEAM 9: @Elio AF @Worm318BATCH 2 ---- TEAM 10: @Mystic 256 @saltybiscuits Well that was fun. I'm looking forward to getting in touch with you all! Tomorrow, I will contact each team individually to make sure that the ball begins rolling. I will provide the map file Sunday. Tomorrow, I will also look to see if I need to modify this list based on mapping formats. If memory serves me right then the majority of people are good with Doom format, so hopefully nothing wrong goes on that front. Anyway, make sure you can get in contact with your teammate; once you do, go ahead and discuss how you want your levels to connect! Original Post: Hi there! For the past few weeks I've been tossing around an idea for a mapping challenge that I thought would be fun for doomworld to take a stab at. Here's the gist, you and another mapper will be tasked with making a map together, but within your grid there is a line that neither one of you are allowed to cross. However, this line has 3 sectors within it that the two of you will have to decide the properties of. Basically, are you going to have a door there? A lava trench? An open pathway etc. You'll need to decide the height, flat, and brightness of this sector. You'll then need to determine who's side the player start and exit are on. But beyond that, when something is on your side of the line, it's your side and you get to make it however you see fit, and whatever your partner does is done at their bidding. Little influence can be sent across the line lest it is done with switches, keys, or anything related to mapping progression. The aesthetics, and theme of your side is your decision! Two completely different aesthetics could be made, it could look like two completely different maps stitched together! Here are some example screenshots with some brief explanations: Spoiler Here is the basic line that every team will be given, the line is not to be crossed nor connected to, and they are infinitely long: Here is a quick mock up of what a basic map could look like (very basic): And here is a little experiment I did with aletheos eberlain. It is larger in scale and more complex than the line in this challenge. We have yet to finish this one, but the basic idea is there. The lines marked with comments are our connecting points: Here is the line before we built in it: So how will teams be decided? Good question! I am asking everyone interested to comment here if they are interested in competing in this challenge. In this post I will keep track of all sign-ups, and at the end of the week (Friday hopefully) I will record a video where I draw names from a hat, two at a time. These will be the teams for this challenge. For each team, the first name drawn will be given the left side of the line. Once you know your teammate, you can immediately contact them and begin to make a basic plan for your map. What then? After that, I am giving teams until the end of September (soft deadline, may extend as I have things to do too!) to finish their maps. This is a soft deadline, as I may extend it both if multiple teams need it and if we need a longer sign-up period. Maps can be made in any format, as long as they work in GZDoom. Both you and your partner must decide what format, for obvious reasons Custom skies and MIDIs are welcomed AND encouraged! Custom resources are... undecided Comment below if you are interested! LINE IN THE SAND MAP FILE WILL BE PROVIDED ONCE TEAMS ARE DRAWN That's basically it for the challenge description, if you have any questions or would like anything clarified please ask! This post may go through a change or two before team drawings begin on Friday if anything glaring is needed. I am also willing to modify the basic map file before Friday. CONTESTANTS: - @BluePineapple72 (if we end up with an odd number of players, I will drop out as to give everyone a chance to participate) (Doom in hexen and UDMF preferred. Steve88 Posted July 20, 2020 (edited) I'll join in but my half will probably be on the smaller side, I have several irons in the fire so to speak taking my time. I can Handle Vanilla, Boom, UDMF, I could try doom in Hexan format. Edited July 21, 2020 by Steve88 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
BluePineapple72 Posted July 20, 2020 Just now, Steve88 said: I'll join in but my half will probably be on the smaller side, I have several irons in the fire so to speak taking my time. Don't worry about that man! Once this thread has circulated enough, I will see if a time extension is needed. Not everyone has enough time to make a cool ass map with another person within a month. I will be willing to extend the deadline to September or maybe even October if it calls for it. We'll see what doomworld has to say about it. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
BluePineapple72 Posted July 21, 2020 (edited) I've changed the rules to allow for teams to choose their format, as long as it is capable of running in GZDoom, to allow for more mappers to participate. Come! Participate! Edit: Oh! Also, if you do sign-up, post what format you are most willing to use and if you're willing to conform to another format to make it easier to match you with another player. It will still be random, but I don't want to run into a situation where two mappers come together and neither one are willing to meet in the middle ground for what format to use. Pegleg Posted July 21, 2020 (edited) I'm in. This should be fun. EDIT: I am willing and able to map in vanilla, limit-removing, Boom, and MBF. I don't know how to map in Eternity, Doom-in-Hexen, or UDMF. Edited July 21, 2020 by Pegleg Added formats. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheNoob_Gamer Posted July 21, 2020 (edited) Count me in, this should be interesting. As for the timeframe, 1 month is a bit strict imo. I suggest extending to about mid September - October. (Btw I'm primitive, that means no Hexen or above pls) Edited July 21, 2020 by TheNoob_Gamer 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

I’ll make sure to edit the post to extend the timeline, as well as to include contestant compatibility wishes 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
4MaTC Posted July 21, 2020 Oooh, interesting. Sign me up. Doom/Boom/hexen/udmf format (boom/udmf preffered) If project will use otex (i'am fine with vanilla or lost resources) i need more time, since otex is huge and i took a glance at it, never used before. And, i think, we need more strict rules, so the map won't be huge and complex at one side and simplistic at other sides. Like square of 2048 map units, or 20 sectors, or something like this 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
DynamiteKaitorn Posted July 21, 2020 Ehh... might as well throw my hat into the ring. :3 I can work with just about any format but I do love Vanilla... even IF it breaks a lot. XD (Though if possible, I'd like to avoid strife & Hexen). 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
ThatWeNGuy Posted July 21, 2020 (edited) Sign me up. vanilla, limit-removing and boom preferred. Edited July 22, 2020 by xxWeNxx 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Morpheus666 Posted July 21, 2020 (edited) i'm thinking Boom format or Doom 2 format, though i will compromise for Doom in Hexen if needed (Vanilla is my preference though) Edited July 21, 2020 by Morpheus666 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
ViolentBeetle Posted July 21, 2020 I would prefer Doom 2 format because Boom mapping somehow makes everything unstable. Although I can just map in the Doom 2 format like a caveman regardless, I believe Boom incorporates all the actions. This seems like an interesting project, although I'm unsure how the linkage is supposed to work. Will we be making requests like "Can you please connect your upper sector with lower because I didn't"? 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Basically, before mapping begins, both mappers will have access to the line file, which has three undefined connecting points. One of you will modify those sectors to whatever properties the two of you have decided on, and then give that modified file to the other player. The connecting point sectors are sacred ground once they’ve been modified, and the whole of your map should be built off of them. I think a small degree of communication will be necessary to make sure that the maps don’t fuck up (I.e. both mappers have a connecting point that goes nowhere). But you’re essentially working in your own file, and once you’re ready one side will have all of its stuff copied over into the other’s file to make the map whole (make sure you save your unattached side however) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheV1perK1ller Posted July 21, 2020 This challenge sounds intriguing, and definitely unique. Count me in. As for the mapping format, I would be happy with Vanilla, but I prefer Boom. I do not wish to map under MBF or above, as I have no experience with those. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
El Inferno Posted July 21, 2020 Sign me up. I prefer Boom and don't have experience with other formats 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

BluePineapple72 Posted July 21, 2020 Awesome! So glad to see so many sign ups! Quick update, I've extended the deadline to September, with the high probability of pushing back to October, as the upcoming school season begins in August and many folks here may be strapped for time. On Friday, once teams are picked, and the video of that is up and ready, I will update the list to be have teams and such. I will then get into contact with each team on either doomworld or discord. Doomworld would be easy since it is right here, but discord's features may make so many parts of this competition easier, so look into that if you haven't created an account already. But worry not! It is not a requirement for you to be on there, but it may make communicating with your partner incredibly easier. I'll also request team names from each pair. I think once teams are selected, you will have the weekend to plan out your basic ideas for how the maps connect with the intention of beginning your maps the following week. But of course, before you do I will check in with every team to make sure that both members are ready and willing to participate. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

TheV1perK1ller Posted July 25, 2020 (edited) I have a suggestion and a question: Suggestion: To avoid maps having repeated linedef tags / sector tags, perhaps mappers on the left hand side of the line should utilise odd numbering for these, while mappers on the right hand side use even numbers. Question: Say if one team decides on a limit removing map, and another on a Vanilla one that runs on Chocolate Doom, would there be compatibility issues in the compiling process? Unless the maps are going to be released separately, of course. Or the compatibility is going to be uniform across all teams. I thought first one will use numbers from 1 to 999, and another one from 1000 to ifinity (and beyond). One thousand would be enough I have a suggestion too, concerning map naming: one contestant will choose noun, and another one adjective. Diablo style Also, a question. Let's say both contestants decided to make an open space map, could maps be stitched together on line, and 3 sectors serving as a bridges?
