Interesting context about the Doom 3 shotgun

i feel like the problem with the doom 3 shotgun is that while the game is made around it its just not fun to have to shoot at am imp 3 times because he is slightely away from you

i also feel like that with this context about the rocket launcher seems like id didnt care for doom2?(at least in weapon balance) i mean if theres a weapon to rule all on doom2 it was the ssg it ruled both the single player and the death match its so weird that they talked like the rocket launcher is the most versitale weapon on doom when its the ssg

i dunno about doom 3 multplayer though since i never played so i dont know how well it worked there

Real shotguns don't start shooting confetti unless your target is sitting right in front of you. Definitely not very long range weapons, but not as pathetic as they are sometimes depicted in games either.

 

 

i dont know why developers make their shotguns so unsatisfing the reason why it was so fun on old fps games is that you could use it to snipe medium distance enemies with it and stuff

the ssg didnt have much range but paired with the standard shotgun you could use them for both close and distant enemies

and the duke nukem shotgun was amazing to use too

i do agree it is a strong weapon and all and i also know how to use it well avoiding attacks and crouching to get closes and using cover with the hitscanners to wait for them to get closer but i just dont find it a fun weapon to use thats my problem with it

i think shotguns are best when they are medium range weapons

I see where you're coming from, The only times I used crouching during combat is .vs tentacle commandos, shotgun started becoming very fun to use once I learned I have to swap to other weapons for trites, zsec and lost souls and sprint to get close and use shotgun for the rest of the monsters. 1 hit killing low-tier enemies with it was very satisfying imo.

The more times I've played Doom 3, the more I feel like the shotgun was probably re-tweaked for a wider spread late into development, when they realized a) just how much shotgun ammo the player would have halfway into the game if he was exploratory and used his shots well, and b) how he could sustain himself with the shotgun 85-90% of the time once he got good with strafing and memorizing the enemy attack patterns. Even with the shotgun having the absurd spread it does, it's ridiculous how much that gun will sustain you once you really know what you're doing. Rebalancing the shotgun and the ammo cap for it would go a long way towards fixing the problems with Doom 3's combat.

Yes, it has a point-blank damage of 182 hitpoints.
