Pseudonaut Posted July 22, 2020 You have to buy the game(s) to get those files. 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
cambreaKer Posted July 22, 2020 or download freedoom phase 1 or 2 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
nname Posted July 22, 2020 Or you can get the shareware version (which only includes the first episode). Just extract the DOOM1.wad file from the archive, put it in the GZDoom folder and run the GZDoom executable. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Reisal Posted July 22, 2020 Doom and Doom 2 are both on Steam for $4.99. Just copy DOOM.WAD and DOOM2.WAD to the GZDoom directory and you'll be set, providing you want the original game files. 8 Quote Share this post Link to post
seed Posted July 23, 2020 Or GOG and Bethesda.net. The one on Bethesda.net is the Unity remaster which has some alterations to maps and sprites, while the GOG version is the same as the DOS version that is also sold on Steam, with the difference being that the Final Doom they're selling is a rarer version containing a patched up version of Plutonia and TNT. The older version can be patched up anyway. So there's plenty of options to choose from, depending on what you want. If you don't want to buy the game use Freedoom or one of the Shareware versions of Doom, which contains only the first Episode and cannot be used to play wads. Just don't ask for warez if you don't want to buy the games, they're still commercially available products and piracy is not condoned here, in which case we have no intention to help you. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted July 23, 2020 Why do people still insist that you absolutely need to copy the IWAD from the Steam folder when ZDoom has been able to automatically find them in a Steam installation for over twelve years? 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Probably to help the Joes out there, and because someone told them once that they need to put them there, unaware of the fact that GZDoom scans the registry to look for their install location, something that not all ports do :p . 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted July 23, 2020 Choco (and therefore, Crispy and also I suppose Retro) do the same thing, as does Eternity (which is actually even more thorough as it also looks for the default install folders of every known physical media distribution of Doom). Same for GOG, too. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

This works on Mac as well, correct? I'm pretty sure last I tried this worked on MacOS but I don't remember for certain. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Nevander Posted July 24, 2020 10 hours ago, Gez said: Why do people still insist that you absolutely need to copy the IWAD from the Steam folder when ZDoom has been able to automatically find them in a Steam installation for over twelve years? Well in my case, I lost my copies of Heretic and Hexen, so I bought from Steam. Installed them, copied the IWADs and then uninstalled from Steam because it was pointless to keep them there since I was just going to use GZDoom. I just wanted the IWADs. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
<inactive>Player Lin Posted July 25, 2020 (edited) I know most of DooM ports do automatic detection for IWADs. But I tend copy game datas to the port as it's my habit to copy game data from any digital distributions' directory to the source port directory as sometimes it helps my trouble-shooting when the port stop working. (I use ZDL as launcher for my installed DooM sourceports and my GZDooM directory as my main DooM thing directory so IWADs are there, and I just point that path.) Again, nothing to do with GZDooM or other DooM ports, it just my habit when deal with game data and source ports. Edited July 25, 2020 by Player Lin Added shit because I found I were missed them somehow... 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
