How much do you play or used to play Doom?

Recommended Posts

Probably 2-3 hours a day or 15-20 hours a week at the moment :-)

Really depends on what else is going on in life though :-P for example, if I have a day off work I might play 4-6 hours and on the other hand, if work has kicked my ass that day then might be 0 that night.

Not regularly and only very sporadically.

I play regularly only when I find a mega WAD I haven't finished already (most recently, that was Ancient Aliens). But as I've finished most of the notable ones on UV -fast already, I really don't play that much anymore TBH.

I don't play Doom.

I am Doom.

You think just because I'm technically at work and not sitting in front of my laptop, that I'm not blasting demons in my head? Think again.

Sentimental post incoming, heh.

Yep, I can totally relate to that. When I was younger I remember just playing Doom like my life depended on it and that I'll never be able to play ever again. I think it started when I was like, 9-12? I used to pump that game full of mods, browse ZDoom Forums like crazy, fooling around in all source of source ports and levels to entertain myself. Oh man, especially during summer. I'd literally wake up just to play it just before breakfast, only taking breaks to go to the bathroom, take a shower, or eat. So I'd put at least 12 hours a day, 7 days a week straight of Doom. If I wasn't playing it, I was watching videos on it, modding it, and even editing videos about it myself. It actually was quite seriously unhealthy, but there were other heavy personal things going on at the time so I saw Doom as an escape from all of my problems.

Then high school came around, shit I was going through got worse, and other bad things happened, I was still hooked on it, if not, more so. It wasn't until my junior and senior year of high school that I decided I needed to make a change. I realized that I didn't play Doom to have fun anymore. I wasn't happy while I was playing it. Making said change inadvertently killed off my horrible addiction to Doom because I didn't need it to "escape" anymore. It has to do with what I've already typed before in the self-improvement thread here on Doomworld, but long story short I forced myself to eat healthier, exercise more, ditch some people in real life that I never should've met, et cetera. I actually met my girlfriend around that time when I was finishing up working on myself (and still am to this day) and she's honestly irreplaceable and special to me, always by my side and supporting me. I didn't have time to even think about Doom at all for about 2 years. I actually became quite extremely busy, but the busier part is over for now.

You'd think the coronavirus would have me playing it a lot again but it's shockingly not what I expected. I'm extremely busy with work, my personal relationship, prepping for college, and moving to perhaps an even entirely new state here in the States. Currently I get 1-3 hours max every other day, sparing the little free time I have to just work on my map for an upcoming project with a group of people. But when I play Doom now I actually feel entertained and enjoy it compared to how I used to be. It's such a great feeling.

I used to be so deeply invested into modding a couple years ago but nowadays it's a maximum of 1 to 2 hours every few weeks (sometimes even months) the only reason I keep the games installed is just in case a mod that looks intriguing enough comes along, and for helping out others with sourceport troubleshooting and modding-related topics every now and then Haha.

I manage to get a couple hours in every late afternoon/evening since I joined the forum. Usually I get a map entry done for the DWmegaWAD Club and check out a couple of single map WADs that people have posted.

I struggle to find time to not play, actually.

I struggle to find time to play but that's because I'm in the editing zone and I want to spend my free time working on wads rather than playing them. I may have to pull an Endless and play through the rest of Akeldama in a marathon session for the DW Megawad Club... ;)

I barely play it nowadays since i'm playing other games, but i plan on going back to it sometime and finish that damn map that i'm working on.

I usually like to play multiple maps at a time and i have a lot of free time, so it really depends, i would say 3+ hours at most.

Off and on periods of playing it in the past, whenever a mod or wad catches my interest. More often now since I arrived here. Been having fun trying the maps people make and uploading the playthroughs. Combines my Doom pastime with my old hobby of fooling around in video editing software.

I play it just about every day. When I'm feeling frustrated/burnt out, I'll take 1-2 days off and play Quake or some of my console games.

I'm not quite what you'd call an "all Doom all the time" gamer... more of an oldschool shooter fanatic. I have a lot of games like Unreal, Blood, Quake, Heretic, Hexen, Serious Sam, Painkiller, Half-Life, Team Fortress Classic, Turok, etc.

Occasionally I do a bit of modern gaming, like Doom Eternal or 2016, maybe a CoD here and there. But when I get in "that" kind of mood, I can play classic Doom anywhere from weeks to months. Months is the current measure, lol... I'm really into it at the moment, nothing but Doom right now.

I keep pretty much every (worthwhile) wad I download in an absurdly organized folder that also has all my IWADs, sourceports and a DOS version of Doom in it, lol. And I often replay old wads from my collection... so yeah, I keep track, hah. That's ignoring the fact I have shortcut icons for every id Software game ever made except Commander Keen and Wolfenstein painstakingly arranged and organized in a special section of my desktop by series, haha. My computer is like an altar to everything id Software. *shrugs* Don't tell nobody, it's a secret.

It saddened me not to see Duke Nukem 3D among them.

Every other day, for an hour or two, maybe more. All depends on the mood and time. Strangely, out of all the newer games that I have in my possession, I still find myself always coming back to Doom.

I haven't really had this (awesome) computer for all that long, so it's not quite perfect yet. But all in all, I have all the id Software games... even including the new Dooms and Quake Champions. Thought about getting Duke3D but that's all the further I got.

@Hellektronic i only played quake3/4/live duel/ctf for 20 years and somehow, quake champs made me angry as fuck

fuck quake, fuck quake forever and their pedestrian interest in actual competition

gonna apologize for being needlessly pointed, that wasn't directed toward you.

i had an emotional investment into the spirit of competition, the game, and the community. the state of idsoft was just sad and their lacking of spine.

I play games for around 3-5 hours a day after work and more like 5-6 on weekends.  Not always Doom, but it's been mostly Doom lately.
